  1. My workshop manual says 1.0 liters (1.1US qts, 0.9 Imp qts) ATF DEXRON II or III reckon is a USA publication , 2000LEXUS LS400 (RM717U) shown on bottom left hand of every page.
  2. The temperature display can also give a false reading if the connections are dirty. Disconnect and clean with some emery paper. I think I fixed my washer bottle float p[roblem I had using a Mk III unit with some alteration to the fitting, swapped a cap or something. These cars are now 15 years old and above now so the sat nav technology is bound to be out of date. Msoft has abandoned XP, why should Lexus provide software updates for old models ?? I still feel the unit is better than sticking one of these modern units to your windscreen and have cables draped everywhere. Those units also are a safety hazard as they block off your vision.Lets face it if you have a crack or scratch on your windscreen you can fail an mot, so a sat nav unit in the same area should be the same. AA route finder is the best place to start.
  3. It was that time of year again, and unfortunately a failure. I knew the exhaust was blowing, but was unaware of the state of the front suspension and steering. I am currently working away from my home base again and could not utilise my local garage. Even Lexus Newcastle found no faults when it was last serviced. I also understand that Lexus Newcastle has gone independent from Lexus. Any way I needed a new track rod end, new front end bushes and welding to the exhaust. Just picked her up and what a difference with the new parts. No more shuddering under breaking just before stopping. Must spend some more time getting her up to scratch when I am back at home. Still I suppose £500.00 for another years superb driving is a small price to pay. I could go looking for a replacement or even try a 430, but better the devil you know is my belief, and I've read so many woes about 430s here I think I will stay clear until 600 's become an option.
  4. My wife has walking difficulties, even after having both knees replaced with titanium. She suffers with an arthritic lower back now. I bought her a Pride Go Go Elite Sport, an electric buggy, for her use. This has been designed to break down into 4 parts , a rear motor unit, battery pack , front unit with tiller and the seat. This fits extremely well in my MK IV. The only problem I find is that the boot floor covering the spare wheel well is not very supportive for this equipment, but a think a carefully fitted piece of ply wood would help here. One disadvantage of having a DHP is that is lower than a standard model making it a little more difficult for my wife to get in and out. The eventual solution, when I am to old to lift the buggy in and out of the 400, is to upgrade to a 450H and install a hoist. But hopefully not for a few years yet.
  5. Noticed the other day that my windscreen wiper arms were looking a little shoddy. It looks as though they had been spayed matt black by a previous owner, and the metal/chrome underneath is showing through. But is that right, what is the correct colour for a MK IV wiper arm. Is it black or chrome ?? What do other models have as their colour ?? What is the general consensus of opinion, clean them back to chrome or keep them as matt black ?
  6. LS 400 Mk4 DHP 1999 in Sapphire with grey leather. Boot seal gone - living with until becomes a problem - interim put holes in floor bungs to drain out water Rear Headlight leveller strut corroded. Replaced with second hand unit Replaced bonnet struts. Washer bottle float failed, replaced with second hand unit. Aerial failed to fully retract - replaced with auction site sourced new mast Few fastening/clips from engine undertray - waiting to find part nos before ordering Rear nearside door seal replaced with second hand one as original had been ripped stopping door closing correctly occasionally. Front disk and pads replaced. Problem with front cigar lighter socket Corroded Alloys - waiting to be refurbished - probably cause of slow leak to on tyre But do have a full toolkit with a working torch and original handbook documents including additional book for Satnav, and LEXUS Audio CD on how to use the vehicle.
  7. If you find someone with a spare i'd be interested as the drivers side temperature display backlight has died on mine, and I don't fancy trying to fix it without having a backup unit that I can use. I presume that the car won't run without the unit installed, and I use my car on a dialy basis. I saw some advertised on the famous auction site, but extremely silly money was being asked for, and I believe one had the same fault as mine. There's a financial threshold for annoying faults and actually fixing them !!
  8. What is the latest version of the Sat Nav disk ?? The one I am using still refers to roundabouts on the A1M that are now flyovers, and the A69 west of Hexham shows as fields when I go that way. A more up to date disk would be a bonus.
  9. I maybe wrong, am not near my car and manual, but I believe that when you lock the doors with the remote, along with closing all windows and moonroof, it locks the doors and flashes the indicators to show it has actioned and set alarm. Pressing close button again, disarms siren, and is reported with a beep and indicators flashing again. I'll reread the manual and report back. Might be an optional dealer setting though.
  10. Steve, the sensor on the MK IV is to adjust the HID lamp vertical position and not the ride height. My MK IV has springs not Air suspension, and that is why there is only on at the front and one at the rear. Chris.
  11. The drivers side of my Mark IV temperature display backlight has died. I was thinking of replacing the SATNAV Console with another whilst I repair the original temp display. I use the car on a daily basis to make my living so cannot have the car off the road for more than a couple of hours. If I buy a replacement unit, is there anything to worry about, like security code etc in the replacement untli that will stop it working and the car running whilst I strip and repair the original unit? Where does the SAT NAV info like Home and marked points get stored. Is it in the head unit or the box in the boot ? Thanks in anticipation for your help. Chris
  12. Have you tried cleaning the AC cabin filter to see if this affects this surging ? It is suprising how much dirt and debris can get into this filter. Also have you tried changing to recirculation mode to see if that changes anything. I never turn my AC off, it has a thermostatic control which decides if cool air is required or not. In winter it helps to clear the front screen.
  13. I have to replace the rear offside door rubber seal on my series IV and have obtained a replacement from the universal auction site. Before I remove the old seal and attempt to install the replacement, I wonder if anyone has done a similar task and has any tips to pass on. Looking at the seal it appears that some form of non-setting adhesive/sealant is used at the bottom of the door along with a set of push in clips. Do I need to get hold of some new sealant or will the old stuff be good enough? Thanks in advance
  14. Apologies 35 years in IT and RTFM is used nearly every day. If you have a Mark IV there are two compartments in the arm rest , a large one and a smaller one above it that is serviced by the air conditioning so keeps things cool ,normally called a chocolate box. It all depends how you lift the arm which box you get access to.
  15. Case of RTFM ???? assuming you have one. I was lucky to get full set of handbooks/keys/tools with my car, including the additional book for the touch sceeen radio/gps. I think there was also an introductory CD explaining all about the car. My favourite toy is the collapsible black metal wedge that you should use to chock the wheel when changing a tyre, followed by the cooled area in the armrest "chocolate box fridge". My only gripe is that there is not a handle inside the boot that you can grab to close the boot. I can end up with dirty fingers if I use the area round the number plate as a clsoing mechanism.
  16. The way to avoid burnt rear on hot leather, for Mark IV owners at least, is to keep your finger on the remote open button until it drops all the windows and opens the moon roof from a distance, thus allowing the hot air to escape form the car. Does this also work on earlier models ??
  17. Similar fix to the one that was done to mine 2 years ago, Except they used a metal putty derivative. It snapped agin this year so replaced it with the correct part off a unit I got off fleabay.
  18. I too have had this problem in the past. My rear leveller arm had snapped and was repaired with what looked like metal putty wrapped around the break to produce a sleeve, this then passed the mot. However this year I noticed a rattling sound from the rear, and took the opportunity to look under the car when I had the rear tyres replaced. The old repair had failed and the broken arm was falpping about and making the odd rattling noise. Looking on fleabay I saw someone breaking a Mk IV - contacted himm, and got a replacement unti all in for £25.00 plus delivery. I am currently working away from home and do not have access to my home repair facilities. But with the help of some WD40 and the standard toolkit plus a small socket set I was able to undo the old nuts from each ball joint under the car. I was then able to replace it with the replacement bar and integral balljionts, which I had removed from the replacement unit in the comfort of my flat. Total time 50 minutes. I still have the eletrical part in case that needs replacing in future. Two days later it went in for its MOT and passed with flying colours and without any advisory notes. It is amazing what can be acheived with the supplied tools, I have replaced the aerial antenna which became stuck up when the nylon insert snapped. I had to take the aerial assembly out an strip it to get the old insert out ogf the gears. However i wouldn't have know where to start without reference to these forums and associated links showing how the job can be done.
  19. Thanks will check them out. Washington, nearby every day, I must be the only LS400 in the Nissan factory car park !!!
  20. My mark IV + DHP was registered 04/09/1998, must have been one of the early ones then.
  21. Just received good news that my September 1998 registered DHP passed the MOT without any problems or advisory remarks. Only had to replace 2 rear tyres earlier this month, and also the rear headlight height adjustment bar between electrical component and trailing arm. Oh yes replaced a broken aerial mast, but let Lexus Newcastle fit replacement wiper rubbers. I didn't realise that the wipers were a different size between nearside and offside even after 5 years of ownership. I am currently working away from my home base, and have managed to fix the 2 items using info from the Internet, Ebay and the standard Lexus Ls400 tool kit. Can recommend MOT testing station and garage I used here in Newcastle. Just need to get my 17" alloys refurbed now
  22. Did they require you to have the vehicle serviced at the correct intervals by a main dealer ??
  23. That looks like a piece of the underskirt of the front end, due to goi8ng over speed bumps probably. I try to avoid straddling thess bumps in my MK IV DHP as they are lower slung than the standard MK IV, and slwoly go over them with the tyre.
  24. I had the same window problem with my MK IV. Took it toLexus and after about 3 attempts to fix, had to order a new motor assembly to fix it. Ouch cost about £290.00. All fixed wonderfully and great to know I can open al the windows and moonroof in this hot weather to cool it off before getting in. The quick fix before that was to make sure the window was at the top and then isolate the back window.
