  1. This car has female genes!!!! Brake fluid OK and there are 2 sensors, one on each offside wheel and both have been spliced. I went out last night with no problems and again this morning doing about 5 miles and no warning signs bing bongs or flashing red triangle. Fingers crossed it's only a glitch. Thanks for your help.
  2. It's happened again. The brake wear warning light has come on the dash and I can't get it off. A few weeks ago this happened and after getting good info from here to check the rear bulbs I had success after replacing some that were turning black but I've been through all the bulbs, changed some, swapped others around but no joy. The sensor wires have been cut and spliced together by a previous owner. My finger ends are sore after spending all afternoon trying to sort it. Have I missed something??.
  3. Welcome to the LOC. It's a great place to be. I'm in Washington, where abouts are you. Mine passed its test as well on Friday so 13 months of hassle free motoring.
  4. On the MK3 LS400 I had the radio code was the last 3 digits of the VIN number. Worth a try.
  5. GrahamG just look at the thread 4 postings above this one, above the photograph, from yesterday by The-Acre. He describes it in detail.
  6. After reading this I couldn't help me self and for the sake of two screws took the top cowling off the column, cleaned the paint off a door bolt, did the 30 second test, used me loaf on the horn push and YIPPEE working. Loosened a bolt on the column and screw on the bodywork. which were easyish to get at, wound the wire round the washers and tightened up and job done. What a Forum. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  7. MLW. I did that to test the horns and they're working. The-Acre. As can be seen in the photo the earth is good, clean and tight. I looked at this this morning before I looked on here so again a good tip but I've had enough. It'll go for its MOT and my trusted garage will sort it. Thanks to all. Jim
  8. MOT's due in Sept. so took both horns off and connected direct to the battery and they're both working so the problem is in the wiring or horn push or as The-Acre says, a dodgy earth on the steering column which I'll look at this week. If no luck my regular garage will sort it along with a new MOT as I don't like the idea of taking the wheel off and risking the air bag.
  9. yes you can adjust it to the required position and leave the motor in. It would help if you've got a young skinny kid among your family or friends.
  10. Yes, I recently adjusted mine manually by taking the panel off to gain access. One screw/bolt in each corner and lying on your back disconnect the wiring and remove the 2 bolts holding the motor using a short and long reach socket on a quarter drive ratchet. DO NOT LOSE the flexible drive between the motor and adjusting screw. It will drop out when the motor is removed. Turn the threaded bolt with a 10mm open jaw to suit your driving position. You can see the square end of the threaded drive and the 2 holes just behind is where the motor fits. If your car is the face lift model then there is an AIRBAG on the panel so be very careful. Pull the fuse and wait 15 minutes. Lexus price £300 and about £70 at auction. I think there is a YouTube tutorial.
  11. Have you made sure its not the 'O' ring joints that are leaking. As you can see they get in a right mess after a few years, Getting the bolts out calls for the patience of a saint !!! Not only will the threads be tight but the shank of the bolt will also be "welded" to the union, Dissimilar metals cause an electrolytic reaction. When the system is regassed the Techie will/should vacuum and purge out all moisture as this would freeze and cause blockages, add the correct amount of refrigerant, lube and ultra violet dye as part of the service .
  12. Thanks for that Malc. I took out all the bulbs and 3 of the small ones were going black, one of the bigger ones and one stop light bulb was also going black but all were working. I changed all the dodgy bulbs, cleaned the rest and yippee!!!! no more bing bongs or Brake Wear warning light on the dash. Without your help I would never have connected these two faults. How reassuring to be in the LOC. PS......the big bulbs are the same size but have different filaments and fittings.
  13. The brake wear light along with the bing bong and flashing triangle came on the other day and went off a couple of days later. Now its on all the time so I took the back wheels off to discover there's only one brake pad sensor on the off side brake. This has been cut and joined to complete the circuit by the previous owner which was what I was going to do. I disconnected the plug and it was as clean as a whistle with no signs of muck dirt or water ingress so I cut the wire back a couple inches and twisted the wires together and taped them up. The rear pads are in need of replacement. I turned the wheel to full lock and saw the front sensor wire had had the same treatment so didn't take the wheel off. Maybe I should and redo the joint. I've disconnected the Neg terminal on the battery and see if this re sets the ECU when I re connect it in the morning. I'll let you know. Any ideas please. Jim
  14. The washer bottle can be got at by taking the headlight off. Saves crawling under neath or jacking it up
  15. Don't be alarmed when you remove the brake drum and see how thin the brake lining is. That's normal as in theory they shouldn't be wearing/rubbing, they only make contact at stand still.
  16. Lexus was the only place I could get a replacement and it was just under £70 inc vat about 3/5 years ago.
  17. This is what happens when the parking brake is neglected. The cable seizes and the alloy housing breaks
  18. Have you checked to see all the wheels are the same size. Early LS's had 15" , later ones went to 16" and not sure if DSP wheels were17. It's been said on here that later cars had bigger calipers and discs so that may be an issue with yours as to why they don't fit.
  19. Early MK 4's 'R' reg, did NOT have electric folding mirrors. They were on later 'V' reg models onwards. I looked at a 'V' reg a couple of weeks ago near Durham and it had electric folding mirrors and a price tag of £3000 and " I wont give it away for less than £2600".
  20. Mysteriously, I've now got a very weak intermitent horn which sounds like there's only one horn working and it only works if I press the left side of the horn push. What colour is the earth wire and I'll look for a relay on Monday. I was fiddling around under the dash to remove the defunct tele steering column motor earlier this year so may have disturbed something. Thanks for the suggestions.
  21. My horn isn't working. I did unplug the horns when I left the car unused with the battery disconnected because the horns sounded on reconnecting the battery and I didn't want to disturb the neighbours or wreck me lugs. I been using the car for a couple of months now and remembered the horns were still unplugged and connected them today and discovered they weren't working. The 10amp fuse under the bonnet is ok but swapped it with another but no joy. Unplugged and re-plugged the horn leads but still nowt. Just wondered what the lead is for going into the item next to the horn. Bonnet alarm maybe?? Any ideas please
  22. It was sold for a hammer price of £1700 plus commission approx £290. The steering column motors didn't work and no proof of cam belt change in service book. It did have BRC LPG fitted.
  23. On Monday I went to Wilson's Auction (formerly SMAG Newcastle) to look at an LS 430 54 reg and the dash showed....Check PCS with the red triangle and a bing bong when the ignition was turned on. I didn't bid as I didn't know what the warning meant so checked when I got home and it was a common fault on the facelift car costing about £1000 to fix. Some were covered/partly covered by Lexus. It's the radar collision system so I'm pleased I wasn't tempted. Not sure if it was sold on Monday so will check later.
  24. If you're in AA/RAC they will read the codes and/or take you to a garage
  25. Taxed & insured the car on Monday so its now on the road. Only done about 30 miles since but a couple of points to raise. It wanders a little at 70mph, got to correct the steering a touch, not exactly arrow straight but its fine at 60mph or below. The temp gauge takes quite a while, about 5 miles or so to come up to normal. Starts to move after 2/3 miles and eventually reaches normal, "quarter to nine". Is it thermostat and/or temp sensor. Where abouts are these items. As the battery ran down when it was off the road I put my camera in the boot to make sure the light went out and it did, so not the boot light to blame. I removed the radio fuse but the radio still works but the controls dont. No volume adjustment and it wont switch off but the controls in the rear work fine. Any thoughts on these problems. Thanks. PS It is very comfortable and relaxed. I have been asked what I paid for the car. Lets put it this way....I was £450 better off by selling my car privately than taking the dealer P/X offer.
