  1. I think you're absolutely right, skill and a good work ethic, the two don't always go together sadly.
  2. Depends who does it and how much of the old is removed I would suggest. There's some excellent welders out there, and some mediocre ones, and some rubbish ones. Yup but unless your an expert welder how would you know The one I employed was supposed to be good but it started to blow again within days hence the replacement of the Y sections The same thing happened on my MK2, welded, fine for a week, and then started blowing again, but they didn't remove any old sections. The garage where I took mine recently also make their own complete systems so I have more confidence in them knowing what they're doing. I did expect them to make a whole Y piece but they said it didn't need it in my case. Time will tell, and if I'm wrong I've got a great recipe for humble pie, I'll come down to Dorset and you can watch me eat it! Phil

  4. Had mine done recently, corroded pipe cut away, flange taken apart and refitted, a new section of stainless pipe, all for £100. I'm told it will be years before anything needs doing in that area again. Mine was leaking under the heat shield as well as the flange so it's repairable if you find a place that can be bothered or has the knowledge. Phil
  5. I didn't know that, the cool box that is. It would have been useful for my water yesterday when it got up to 34 degrees in London. I thought I'd read all of the manual, I obviously missed that one. Well as the topic of this post says, you learn something new every day! I always keep a bottle of Vintage Moët & Chandon and some Foie Gras, unsalted butter and French Toast just in case I see and stop another LS400 owner. Mike I'll put that to the test if I see you, mind you, you can keep the goose liver, give it to the dog. I was in Fareham, Havant and Southampton last week, is that anywhere near you? I had 3 hours to kill.
  6. I see a far amount of the RX400H where I am in West Sussex, in fact a neighbour has just bought one. I rarely see an LS400, although it is a rarer car. When I go to London I nearly always see one, yesterday being one of those days. Strange choice for London really considering it takes an hour to travel 10 miles! Phil

  8. RTFM = Read the Fudging Manual (substitute F word of choice for Fudging) Apologies for making a mess of the quoting. I see, so RTM would suffice?
  9. Can anyone tell me what to look for first? This has only happened twice, and both times when crawling through traffic in central London for some reason. It happened again yesterday. It's coming from the rear off side and sounds like an old mans bones creaking, and you can hear it when the rear of the car is pushed down. As soon as I got moving on the M23 it stopped, and I didn't hear it again, even when I got off the motorway and back in town. There's no problem with it again today. It's not even that I'm going over bumps or anything in bad traffic so I'm a bit mystified. Any advice on where to look appreciated. Thanks Phil
  10. It's interesting if you watch the youtube clip where it's explained how its done. A little bit sick if he's right.
  11. Ok Steve, thanks for that. I don't think I'll touch it as it's not really too much of an issue, just not 100%. I'll wait until I take it next to the excellent Grove Garage in Hove, they seem very knowledgeable about these cars. Phil
  12. Which brings me back to something I posted moths ago. "Anyone found any buttons they didn't know they had?" I only discovered last week that my sun roof ( sorry, moon roof) tilts as well as slides! Never discovered that mine doesn't have the sun/moonroof. Well you haven't missed much. I think I mentioned on this forum a couple of days ago, I was parked under a tree in the shade with the sun/moon roof open and got crapped on! I see you're from Sussex, you weren't near Screwfix in Eastbourne were you? I was there on Friday, looking through their catalogue in blistering heat, so with all windows and roof open. Never seen so many seagulls, no wonder all the buildings have roofs like concentration camps. I didn't get crapped on btw, but I think I was very lucky. Then last night, having knocked the kitchen wall down, I took my pizza and cider outside to get away from the dust. The sods were dive bombing me from all angles and squawking to tell their mates there was food about. Luckily for them my guns are locked up 200 miles away, or I'd have been sorely tempted to thin down the gull population, probably closely followed by a visit from an armed response unit!! No but I did give Screwfix in Chichester a sideways glance as I went past! In fact Chichester is where the offence took place. We live near the sea so the gull problem is always there, we have them nesting on our roof again this year, they get very noisy.
  13. I seem to remember reading recently that there's a cable (maybe accelerator cable?) that can be adjusted to prevent 1st gear being selected too early. Does anyone know if that's right? Occasionally it seems that when I'm at a roundabout for instance, it changes to first when 2nd would be better. It's not really a problem, but if it can be fixed by a simple adjustment some advice would be appreciated. Thanks Phil
  14. Which presumably means there's something wrong with mine, time for some investigation..... Pre late 99 models only dip the left hand mirror. 2000 models should also auto fold. Ah, well done, that saves me taking things apart!

  18. I tried again but only the passenger side dips. I'm sure I've read that other MK4 owners find the same thing.
  19. No surprise. When my wife bought her Corsa is was just 1 year old, bought from a main dealer with the "Network Q" promise. Within months the CD player stopped working "Sorry, not included" Weeks later a door trim came off, "Sorry, not included"
  20. It seems that a re gas depends on where you go. Where I live it starts from £45 and goes up to about £85. The main thing is to have the dye test to see if you're leaking somewhere. Air con is supposed to be used for 30 mins a week to keep the seals from drying. A decent re gas engineer will be able to tell you if the compressor is working. Phil
