  1. That video link Cruismark put up is very good, I maybe skipped a few bits, but didn't see the crank pulley holding tool bit. The pulley bolt in the vid. came off with an impact wrench- you can get 250volt ones, no air line required. I'd have a go myself now, given the garage space. wouldn't have before. I like the way they tape the belts together to transfer the marks, makes it foolproof. That big guys knows what he's about
  2. I have vague recollections of a fault involving the steering power pump sometimes bleeding fluid into the induction manifold, that would cause a smoky exhaust. Engine wear doesn't usually happen
  3. I can't disagree with you, but against that, there's the plus of getting a slightly less restricted air flow. I know that any mods to the properly designed system are usually a bad idea, but one of the parameters the original designers had was quietness balanced against air flow. Its pulling air from inside the engine bay, yes, but it is at the front and I am in Scotland, the ambient air up here is 6 degrees today, so I'm betting the air in the engine bay is a darn sight cooler than outside air in say, California! Drilling out a spare airbox would be an option, too
  4. Drove from Glasgow to London in my humble LS400 mk4 with my 30 year old son- he insisted on driving all the way, I would have had to prise his cold dead hands of the wheel to get him out of the drivers seat!
  5. I drive my Mk4 about without the air induction plastics that go across the top of the radiator, I test drove it that way once after replacing the starter contacts and decided I like the subtle induction roar that the Lexus engineers had been at pains to silence.
  6. I'm assuming you are speaking from experience? The LS400 starter is very time consuming to replace, and the MK1 is apparently the worst of the lot. The starter is in the "V" under the manifold, not very accessible, to put it mildly
  7. "Steve 2006 is the font of all knowledge with getting the correct type and quality capacitors .......... pm him on here I would suggest" Then you need to find a good old school tv or computer repair guy who can solder, and take the caps and your ECU to him. Getting the ECU out is a bit tricky too....
  8. There's an engine ECU temp sensor, could be failed, they do age. If the ECU doesn't see the engine warm up it will keep the idle high, and run over-rich
  9. i quite often do that, go to put the radio on and then realise I'm actually enjoying the serenity
  10. I don't know if it's related to your problem, but a relatively common issue is the caliper slides sticking, which you can tell as the pads will be unevenly worn (thinner at one end than the other ) That will certainly affect pedal travel.
  11. I have a MK4 and changing the ECU caps perked general performance up a bit
  12. Facinating stuff Bluesman, but the desmodronic aspect of valves refers to the way they close:- Desmodromic valve - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desmodromic_valve A desmodromic valve is a reciprocating engine valve that is positively closed by a cam and leverage system, rather than by a more conventional spring
  13. I had a cold call that resulted in a Swinton quote with a "£75 cashback after 3 months" 287 - 75 = 212 My Adrian Flux renewal quote was £355, up from £335 last year, I told them the Swinton quote and they came back with £235 Result.£120 off!
  14. I would think a LS 400 mk4 would be the best option, but wouldn't ignore a good 430 if I came across one, but would fit an external trans cooler! ls400lpg, I have had both single and multi-point lpg on my ls400's, if yours has distributors rather than individual plug paks, I would renew the plugs and HT leads, My single point system kept blowing up the inlet tract as worn leads and plugs sometimes track across, and you get a spark occasionally at the wrong cylinder with its inlet valve open, which ignites all the gas back to the gas injection point, usually causing some damage
  15. Wondered when you would notice this one! Tempting, but I wonder if the seller is being entirely frank with his description....might be worth a look...
  16. Only possible issue there is the corrosion can creep under where the tyre bead seals and give annoying very slow drop in tyre presure
