  1. I've chickened out replacing the original unit as the wiring is too complicated and I loose the CD player, the Subwoofer (if its that thing under the parcel shelf) and some of the speakers possibly. I've replaced units before but this is no simple swap - know your limitations. With regard to the backlighting, I watched a vuetube video of some guy showing how to replace the unit and he clearly left the battery connected and the ACC on, as there was lighting to the buttons which I don't get. Is this to what you are referring? Gingerly took off the front of the unit and unless the two white things are illumination not sure where the bulbs may be? Or is it the strip that makes the lighting which of course has failed in mine?
  2. I don't know if this can be relied upon. I bought the Scoche TA02B connector kit which is referred to in the Lexus Image thread on how to install a car radio. Not sure what year the car seen is, but on the Connector packet suggests Yellow Battery Constant, Red 12v Ignition switched, black Chassis ground. Totally different to above. Maybe the scoche being "1987-up Toyota" is not for 93 cars. Should I assume that? Looking at the existing car wiring I need to know what is what. The wiring is all colours and dots. Not as simple as I had hoped. Will search for the actual Car wiring diagram assuming its not in Japanese!
  3. Ooops - sorry panic over - no need to remove connectors -thats a relief. Brain kicked in at last! Not sure if the brain can fathom this wiring. Bought a TA02B Scosche harness but working out which of the two similar existing blocks (of four in all) is the correct connection, I'll need to refer to the car wiring diagram. Pass one problem only to come up to another. C'est la vie!
  4. Got the Climate control and Radio block out of its housing - can't fathom how the Orange connectors in a white housing come apart / pull out from the back of the Climate control box. Will keep trying to figure it out but if anyone knows? Looked at the diagram by lexis to replace the radio but it doesn't explain and I only have two Orange connectors not three so earlier car may be different. Thanks Afterthought , maybe I can remove radio leaving the connectors in situ? Prefer not to try but......
  5. Didn't install Sony as too complicated wiring. Not sure I could have used an FM transmitter in this car (the memory failing) as the Radio only has LW and MW. The orignal bakck in place it has a pretty good sound, so will have to play my MP3 through my HP Ipaq. No other way without FM. CD Changer still working for five of six slots.
  6. Need to re-read this thread which may be helpful. Quick Q. with apols for slight diversion. Got a Sony Xplod MEX-BT3800U which has been in the box for two years sitting in front of me fixed to the new carry cradle. Before I fit it I haven't a clue if the CD changer in the boot will connect to it? Anyone know if it will connect direct or with an adapter or is the fact they are two different brands a no no? Using my MP3 with a transmitter has been ok but not brilliant. Bit worried that Sony's ATRAC on the MP3 may however not work on this unit so may still need the tiny transmitter. This is all making me hesitate the installation. Thanks
  7. My Licence is back on the DVLA register. Only after chasing on the phone was I on the 8th told that it would be restored and given a reference number. Despite having received no acknowledgement of my letter I checked their site to find it up on the 15th December 2015. Meantime I'd written to Dougie Carswell my MP and his acknowledgement and copy letter of complaint he wrote to DVLA on the 9th, was received by me on the 16th. On the same day I received a call from DVLA asking if I'd received their letter - No? It arrived on the 17th dated the 9th December. The Woman asked if I'd received their letter and I pointed out that I had not and that as a courtesy I expected to receive a letter before now. Then after discussing the inconvenience and the cost with her she said the letter enclosed a D1 Form to apply for a new plastic Driving Licence as they did not issue paper ones anymore. Can you believe it, she clearly had not seen my letter enclosing a photocopy of my watermarked driving licence WHICH CLEARLY I STILL HAD IN MY POSSESSION!! "Oh, Ok ignore the last paragraph" was her reply.! The left hand not knowing etc ??? Dougie's asked them to explain - but I bet "human error" will be the extent of their explanation.
  8. Strange. Only "clonk" I get is with Aerowipers when they return to Park the passenger side hits the bonnet. Nuisance and couldn't work out how to stop this so probably taking the paint off the bonnet edge ever so slightly. S'pose I should get a slightly shorter blade for it than original size.
  9. It will cost you over £600 from Lexus and it won't includeany gaskets. Check out ebay,com and you'll find a complete kit for much less. Can't say as to the quality as I didn't know about it until too late (empty pockets) This does include the Water pump which its best to replace at the same time.
  10. Found this parts listing and pricing on toyo. Bit puzzled by cost of 32921D $70.85 for a piece of rubber hose?? 32922 price €11.40 looks more realistic, but....? Trying to fathom what I need from this list which is difficult without an exploded image. Anyone got an image of the oil cooler system to Auto box?   11. Mine idled on the high side until I decoked the Throttle body. That may not have been the cause and it did idle rather high when I put back the throttle body with the Sensor possibly in a different position owing to my marking it poorly.. There's a good vu tube video on checking and adjusting Throttle sensors, albeit not on a Lexus. Confess that after the engine seemed to idle rather high I changed the position ever so slightly and now idles when warm at around 600rpm. Start from cold about 1100. If I have the Climate control selected this does increase the idle revs somewhat, so it gets turned off when likely to be stationary or when freewheeling downhill into Town to keep to 30mph.
  12. Interesting old thread this. I'm having an Auto box fliter change shortly and seem to recall my mechanic saying soemthing about the flexible tubes needing replacement. I suspect that these are manufactured attached to the metal pipes? Does anyone know if the rubber part can be bought and fitted seperately or is it a mortgage to get the pipes from Lexus.? At present I'm not keen that the pipe to the Radiator be disturbed as I know the possiblity of failure internal to the Rad.
  13. You may be wrong on this. I smeared vaseline on my Sons battery terminals and he didn't start the car for several weeks. When needed to remove the car to a different location not a thing would turn on. Battery was still fully charged. Vaseline I've read is actually a non- conductor of electricity. In the past I think it was only used to smear the top of the termnial once the connector had been fitted to stop corrosion.
  14. If you use the original wheelnuts (and they are going to show) get a set of plastic/chrome caps off t'bay for a tenner. 21mm Hex pack of twenty. I used a bit of blue tack to hold them on, especially needed for the locking wheel nuts.

After the events in Paris the hiring of a Car in Europe will be much harder and need to comply to the EU rules - doing a DVLA Licence check for all potential British hirers and similar where such databases exist for other Europeans who want to hire vehicles. Quite how that works with some Countries I haven't a clue. Tracing hirers details was seen as essential to intelligence in finding the source of the situation.
  16. I hired a Car at Nice in September on my paper licence . The guy said he had never seen one before. I think I must have been lucky as not only to have been given the Car, but also not to have had any sort of prang in it. I would have seen the inside of a French Cell if I had! The below link is in stark contract to the assertions of DVLA that errors are rare. Apparantly I've read that the PM wrote three times on behalf of a disgruntled Constituent Licence holder, and got nowhere!
  17. Being completely grounded I can tell you what you guys are missing. Having to lug a Flight bag full of tools and drills to my Sons by Train and then over cobbled paving rattling like a Snake inTexas, My wife and I left before 9pm to catch the Train home only to be accosted on the deserted Platform by a Smackhead looking like Jimmy Sommerv.. who when told we didn't have any money walked away F'ing angrily under his breath within earshot. We boarded the Train for London even though it was not the Train we wanted. Got off and waited for correct Train home and when it arrived who should get off but Birthday Boy who didn't have enough Dough to get to Saff-end. Still trying to tap people for cash. Monday its a Bus journey to the Dentist to check this toothache. Great week I'm having. What a pleasure being without a Car is - courtesy of DVLA's ineptitude!
  18. Watchdog did an item on DVLA's incompetence back in 2009 I see on google. The guy I spoke to yesterday (my first class Post "signed for" letter sent the day before HAD NOT ARRIVED OR BEEN SIGNED FOR! ) said that they get 10,000 letters a day. Think perhaps I should have sent it WITHOUT being signed for, as I can't imagine an employee of DVLA signing for perhaps hundreds or maybe thousands of letters on the PO Hand recorder. I'll send it again today without "signed for" and keep phoning them, at cost rates. The Flat removal of my Son has cost me £250 against £60.00 Hire cost of a Van. Just had to pay up.

Your thread put me in a blue funk until I read this on money saving expert quote "If you have a paper licence that was issues pre-1998, these generally don't expire until you're 70, so you don't need to do anything until then unless your address or personal details change. All licences must be in the photocard format by 2033. Once you reach 70 there's no fee to renew, and you'll then get a photocard" Unquote. My paper Licence was issued well before 1998 on change of address and should be listed as valid. The only curious possible coincidence and pure conjecture on my part as to DVLA's error, is that I believe my Mother may in 2003/2004 have surrendered her Licence by Order of the Court owing to a minor incident and Police advice. At 84 I was quite understanding that her driving days were over. Now I can empathise with the trauma it caused her and was partly I'm sure responsible for her gradual decline into dementia. She loved to drive and hated the idea of being without her Car. We become dependant and sometimes more so, as we age. How would Members cope with not being able to drive I ask?

As a small business owner I renewed a Consumer Credit Licence for thirty years each five years the final being despite knowing the CCA Licencing was to be abandoned one year later for the Financial Conduct Authorities introduction. After complaints to my MP I did get a refund for the four unnecessary years paid and had to make an application to the FCA for interim permission. Thankfully, I have been able to successfully argue that I do not need a Licence from the FCA and so no Application needed to be made. Had it been necessary I would have closed the business as the monumental nature of this legislations requirements to comply would make running a small business an absolute nightmare. The real culprits in business will invariably either not apply for a Licence or not be spotted and inevitably avoid prosecution where wrongdoing is discovered. The Data Protection Act was IMO a Sledgehammer to crack a Nut and where the decline of our Country started. The legislation grows apace despite as I recall David Cameron saying "we are going to cut red tape from small businesses". With the Belgium legislative Beaurocracy machine in full throttle the opposite has taken place.
  21. OK off direct Car topic. I had a bizarre day yesterday. My youngest Son who has mental health issues, needed my help to move Flats. Got up early and merrily scraped the frost from my Car Windscreen having pre-arranged to Hire a Transit van from a firm I hired from, four years ago. To my dismay, having brought along my Driving Licence (Paper variety), a Utility Bill and my National Insurance number I was told I could not be traced on DVLA's Driving Licence Register. Phoned through to DVLA to be told that I had surrendered my Licence in 2003! No I didn't I have it in my hand complete with Watermark! Invoking the Data Protection Act they would give no other information but suggested I fill out a D1 Application for a Driving Licence. So according to their records, technically I could be arrested if I drove my Car home and have been uninsured for twelve years!. I'm grounded until DVLA find their mistake. Unlikely to be quick. I have witten to them and NOT filled out a D1 form as I don't want them taking the short cut route of suggesting I need to take a Driving Test etc, etc.. I've had a clean FULL (a) (d) & (e) driving licence for fifty years and it expires next year.. Absolutely unbelievable, not to mention extremely inconvenient. MY ADVICE TO ALL WOULD BE TO GO ONLINE TO DVLA AND CHECK YOUR LICENCE IS CORRECTLY RECORDED.

  23. Paul - Now thats what I call putting a Cat amongst the Pigeons !! but thanks if you are absolutely sure on this. I have asked the Question what did Fluid type T-II mean? and I made an assumption it meant Dextron. The debate will no doubt continue during my absence and as a 1993 owner I'll look forward to reading updates on my return. I'll buy whichever is the right fluid for the car irrespective of price. G. knows I've spent enough not to want to wreck the car after so many issues have now been resolved. Pity the Handbook did not actually give a brand product.
  24. I think I told you I had to pay £95.48. Pretty sure this is for the import of the two Rear UCA's. My bill shows Customs duty £10.42 Excise Duty £0.00 Import duty £71.56 Other £0.00 Clearance Fee £13.50 (zero rated for VAT purposes) total £95.48 Hope this helps.
  25. Ooops! sorry if I seem to be going against advice - Unintentional. I assumed that older model cars which stated in the manual "fluid type T-II or equivalent" meant Toyota Dextron 2. Was I wrong? If not, my trying to get to grips with this issue suggested Toyota labeled Dextron III must be an "equivalent" but no info as to if 3309 compliant. The price is what caught my eye. Yet to buy, so I guess I can try to engage my brain once again around this issue in due course. ps What specific parts in an auto box vary from manufacturer to manufacturer in terms of the material used?
