  1. David, You are doing mainly short journeys with a cold engine. If you want high MPG under these conditions then the smaller the engine and the lighter the car the better. With a nice warm engine you will probably achieve or even exceed the manufacturers figures. John
  2. It's knowing where to hit it that counts.
  3. John, So sorry to read about this but thankful you were not injured. I hope all can be resolved very quickly. John
  4. The Wikipedia entry for Headlamp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headlamp#Optical_systems is informative reading. The HID section comes about half way through. I have replaced HID bulbs in my church that have been so blackened I wonder any light could escape at all. The replacements gave out much more light. Blue light is scattered much more than red light*. That is why fog lamps are orangey. If they were blue much more light would be scattered - some directly back - and thus not so effective. Oncoming blue lights are much worse for the oldies amongst us. We have much more crud floating round in our eyes and this crud scatters light. Dirty windscreens scatter light no matter what age you are. Hope this generates more light than heat. John * It's why the sky is blue and setting sun is red.😊
  5. Blind eye possibly caused by bad headlights? 🤔 John who could not resist - sorry John
  6. I bought these recently and fitted one just to compare. It is indistinguishable from a lower cost HID that I fitted in August 2016. These lower cost ones were £15.99/pair inc p&p from A&E Trading Ltd in Slough via eBay. (I wanted a UK supplier.) John
  7. 2009 RX450h with LEDs? When did Lexus start using LEDs? If in fact they are Xenon then new bulbs will certainly be brighter. HIDs slowly degrade and by the time they fail the bulb will look back and you wonder how any light got out at all.
  8. I have recently been looking at storage heaters. Two salesmen I spoke to repeatedly told me the heaters were German made. I found that rather insulting. Yes he is missing something. Well two things. One the hybrid reclaims the energy otherwise lost in braking, and two, adding the electric drive motor enables a more efficient Atkinson cycle engine which otherwise would have inadequate mid-range torque. John
  9. Kal, Sorry to hear of your problems. You seem to have had all the 450h problems. If you do get a price from TB could you post please? I will be needing something in the not too distant future. I'm going to call in on Longlife Cardiff Exhausts next time I am passing to get a price from them which I will post. Another possibility is 304 Stainless Exhaust Parts in Worcester which I will investigate. TB certainly has 450h experience and satisfied customers on this forum but Cardiff might be nearer for you. John
  10. Harry That does rather suggest that they disturbed something. No demist is very inconvenient even dangerous especially on the drivers side. Other SC430 owners? John
  11. Harry, Was it demising OK before the recall work? John
  12. And very annoying to anyone following.😬 John
  13. David, I wonder if I can give an energy overview of what is going on. Imagine the battery is fully charged when you get into the car and it then drives entirely on battery for a while. You are using no petrol so mpg appears infinite. However you are using energy. At some point the engine will cut in to both drive the car and to replenish the battery. Now you are doing less mpg than just diving the car because you are charging the battery as well. All this with a cold engine too. Overall you get more mpg than you would from a non-hybrid engine because you can recover the energy a non-hybrid would loose in braking. Also with an electric motor to assist the combustion engine this can now be an the Atkinson cycle engine which is more efficient. The disadvantage of Atkinson engines is lower torque but with an electric motor to assist this disadvantage can be negated. Does this help? John
  14. David, Welcome. Your low mpg is down to the short journeys as the engine never gets warm. I don't know if the NX can display the mpg every minute. If so, look at this on a short journey. When I look at mine it takes some miles before my average gets above 30mpg even when the roads have cleared. The bars show why. I know my engine is bigger and perhaps takes a bit longer to warm up. . My neighbour has a Vauxhall Zafira 1.8 diesel I think. He gets low 20s around town on short journeys as do I. I can manage over 45mpg over 80 miles of M4 A34 but only if I do a reset when doing the motorway with a warm engine. And mine is the less efficient Mk 3 engine - pre Atkinson. Hope this reassures you nothing is wrong. John
  15. Alex, I have tried expensive well known make and also lower cost bulbs at 1/7th the price. One of each in my car at present. I can't tell the difference. John
  16. Robert, Many thanks for this. I do go by Cardiff from time to time so next time I will pop in and see what they say. John
  17. Or is it the headlamp glass that has gone yellow? John
  18. Add to that list for capacities 450h 280 litres. The cabin is roomy enough although the rear middle seat is best described as occasional. The boot is small because of the hybrid battery. John
  19. Shafiq, Welcome. You have come to right place for help. The GS450h boot would be far too small for a family of 5. As Phil says above look for an RX. Good luck. John
  20. Kev About 3" towards the offside and forward slightly from the outer head rest pillar base you will see a little indented ring in the leather. Press it! Having typed this I can't remember what changes up/down but have a fiddle. Once set it will move automatically with the seat height I think. Certainly it moves between settings for my wife and I and she has different seat height. John
  21. DIY bulb replacement is straightforward and much easier if you have small hands. I don't but I did my first replacement with no problem using £8 bulbs. Three years on I replaced one of these with a £55 Osram Nightbreaker Xenarc to see if it was better. (The £8 bulb was OK.) I cannot tell the difference. John
  22. Nothing, but somebody else scraped the rear bumper. Presumably all four corner having been scraped we now have to have the flatter bits damaged. Always happens when parked and we take trouble not to park where we might get scraped. John
