BEAMS stands for "Breakthrough Engine with Advanced Mechanism System".

It is just a term used by Toyota for some of their engines (to name a few: 1g-FE, 3S-GE and 1ZZ-FE )

they don't always deploy - something to do with how the crash happens

when my 3 series met with a crash barrier almost headon at 70ish mph :o the airbag didn't deploy

There's not much damage at the front - yeah, the bonnet's a mess, but the rest of it didn't take much of a hit. The airbags won't deploy for the rear impact anyway.

Like rob200 says, it depends on the speed/angle of impact, deceleration etc etc.
