Disadvantages of CHAdeMO ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Happy New Year,

I am considering getting an electric car for my next car and am interested in the UX300e but notice it has a CHAdeMO charge socket and it seems like the most popular type is the Type 2 or CCS type. It seems a bit like the Betamax/vhs debate.

Are their any disadvantages of the CHAdeMO socket, have you ever found you are unable to charge whilst on the go as tethered chargers don’t fit?

I already have an untethered charger at home, a zappi, for use with my wife’s Corsa when/if she ever gets it. The Corsa has a type 2 socket.
Will a car with a CHAdeMO socket be unusable in the future if all public chargers are type 2?
sorry if these are basic questions but until you have experience of what is out there you don’t know.
Thanks

Paul

HNY 🙂

The number of CHAdeMO chargers continue to increase in the UK but not sure for how much longer. It is only the Japanese manufacturers that insist on using it and even the latest Toyota/Lexus and Nissan EVs will now coming with CCS. So yes you could struggle to find rapid DC CHAdeMO chargers in the future.

It’s only fast charging that is the issue. The 300e has a standard type 2 ac charge port for overnight ‘destination’ charging so you can use your Zappi.
