Handbrake Warning Indicator

My handbrake warning indicator in the dash wont turn off. I have applied and released the handbrake many times to make sure but the indicator stays on all the time. The car drives as normal as far as i can see, and i have been on the motorway to Heathrow too (at 70mph+) with no adverse reactions so does that mean the indicator is just faulty or that my handbrake is kaput?

How can i rectify it and more importantly how much will it cost does anyone know?

Any help much appreciated.

This happened to me, I thought it was due to low brake fluid, but it turned out that my 3rd brake light (the one where the rear windscreen is) bulb was blown.

Your brake light could be out ......... it also comes on for that.

you guys are priceless. The cigarette lighter works fine so electrics are ok. I checked for your other suggestion and guess what the rear left brake light is out.

Thanks for the pointers guys i would have looked a right burk down at the dealers.

PS. Not being car minded, what do i do just stick in another brake light bulb? I can do it my self from inside the boot right? Just a simple bulb change right?

Thanks
