Just fitted new Black Diamond front discs and pads on my series 2 GS - has anybody else done this recently and if so, how long did they take to bed in?

I've done about 20 or 30 miles so far and they don't appear to be very good at all - quite a bit of braking effort required and lots of travel before they 'bite'.

It was booked in for a timing belt change anyway, so I asked Lexus to look at it and they agreed that the braking performance was poor and could only point to the non-Lexus discs and pads (not a huge surprise!)

I've seen that people here have used Black Diamond stuff and been very happy with it.. any ideas what might be wrong? do they take a long time to bed in?

of course they will be mushy to begin with, they are new!

I thought 200 miles is the norm for bedding in. 20 miles is nothing!

also, when was the last time your brake fluid was changed?

personally, i fitted stainless steel brake lines, and I've got oem pads n discs, and brakes "feel" a lot stronger than before.

Yeah, it's posible I didn't clean the disks thoroughly before fitting them... how long do you reckon it would take to burn off any residue of the coating?

As for the fluid - I bled about a Litre of new stuff through the system when I changed the pads so I reckon that should be okay, and I'm pretty sure there's no air in there.

They appear to be getting better so it probably is just 'bedding in'.

I'd say its definately bedding in mate. As the guys have said you need to do about 200 ish miles. No hard braking though if you can avoid it.

What pads have you fitted? Black diamond also? Alot of people use EBC Greenstuff pads with the black diamond discs and rate the combo quite highly.

Everyone is right!I felt nothing for about 200miles and then they just seemed to 'bite'

Above is the same set up i've got they are about 300miles in and put me through the window

Brillant brakes.

Give them time.

Excellent.. I'm using Black Diamond combo discs and Predator pads so hopefully when they've bedded in they should perform pretty well.

Where did you get your steel brake lines from, Maneesh? How much of a difference do you reckon they make? I've always thought the brakes on the Mark II GS's were a bit spongy - definitely nowhere near as good as on the Mark III Lexus Hatfield loaned me while they were sorting my Cam belt.. very nice car, lovely engine and brakes that felt as if they could put you through the windshield and over the bonnet.

Interesting to see that Lexus still haven't sorted out the old rattling dash problems though! :o

www.rotora.com, but I picked them up when I was over in the states. i think you can get goodridge ones here tho. chips fitted some to his aristo..

they make a big difference in terms of "how firm" the pedal feels, and i had them fitted before nurburgring, and i felt a lot more comfortable racing with "non spongy brake pedal"...

They only seem to do them for the IS200 at the moment - had a quick Google and couldn't find anything for the GS300. Any ideas?

Give them a ring and they'll be able to tell you if they make them or not. I think they do  If not they'll make them for you anyway

I had Black Diamond discs AND pads on my 300 sport and were superb. Took a lot of bedding in mind with a fair bit of squealing under light braking. Even after 500 miles. They were 'glazed' and a wee rub of sandpaper to the pads sorted that out.
