I hope this doesn't go in your "silly answers" bin, but I would always try to get a second opinion.

E.g., my 1996 has now passed two MOTs without any of the £1000+ work that Lexus told me suspension needed.

rockauto is $249 for the cat= £125 x 2 = £250 for the cats + say £80 for shipping and tax and then the y piece you'll be looking at £400ish.

half price. bit of a saving.

plus they ship quick, i got my stuff in 48 hours

Hi

There a cat specialists on the web that will sell universal cats for a fraction of the Lexus price I paid £95 each for the mid cats on my SL320. If you have a tame garage or someone handy with a welding set they can replace your cats and any damaged pipework.

Regards

Used quicksteel on the backbox on my old 800 turbo, worked a treat, I think it would have outlasted the rest of the exhaust, much better than gun gum.

wont break the bank just to try it will it?

You can get two cat which are universal cats from the US eBay which are quite cheap(I think about £75 each). Then you can get the flanges for them from this link near the bottom of the webpage. http://www.lextreme.com/allgo.html

You can then get it all welded up at your local exhuast garage or someone like longlife who should also be able to make you a rear pipe while there. This should be at least half the £800 you've been quoted.

OR the other option is to fully remove the cats with a stright through bypass pipe from Japan. They are about £200 for a pair new. Just need to put your cats back near the MOT time and you also have some better noise and power while the're out(wink).

Just update of this problem.

Had some back boxes fitted to my LS this week by longlife and had a quote on how much it would be to replace to blowing from the joints on my cat bottom flanges. I tried welding them, Nut still a little blowing so here's the results.

To stop the blowing Longlife will remove the bottom flanges next to the cats and insert a new pipe over the old part off the cat with new flange joint and run new striaght through pipes to the rear boxes taking out the middle boxes for £250 for the pair for a much more free flowing system. They were also willing to attach the new universal cats from the US if desired and attached their own flangs to them.

And all this time I'd thought Lexus fitted STAINLESS pipes! :crybaby:

Good luck; thanks for the info!

I think only selected parts of the exhaust system on LS and GS models are made of stainless steel.

I have just replaced the parts you speak of...both cats and the Y piece....the exhaust is stailess tubing...but the flanges to the cast manifolds are steel...and they rot away letting it blow at this joint...the only way I could see a proper fix was to bite the bullet...got all new Lexus parts and new gaskets and new studs to do the job right...all is OK now ...the rest of the system...rear boxes etc looked great...I thought of making up stainless flanges and having them welded to the old pipes...but looked a proper nightmare to do it properly....Good Luck.

Matter of interest how much did you pay for the lexus parts etc and all the fittings.

I've been quoted £250 for both Longlife pipes straight back to my rear boxes(Aftermarket with some very big afterburners sticking out the back) with the bottom of the cat flanges taken out and replaced with longlife ones.

Personally I wouldnt pay lexus prices for exhaust parts - find an exhaust place you can trust (Custom exhausts in Cardiff is the one i use) and have them do owhat you want.

In my case mine was blowing when I got it - they found that there was only one bolt in a two bolt flange - the joint had been plastered in exhaust paste - so they seperated it, cleaned off the old paste and applied a small amount of fresh paste and another bolt - all fixed up good as new for a wopping £10 !

Exhaust work doesnt have to cost the earth !

Cost was £600 ish for the two cats... pennies for the studs and nuts...and a couple of hundred for the Y piece....I was in no position to just replace bolts and gaskets....the flanges were rotten and I did not want to change the set up from standard Lexus parts...in my mind you would perhaps loose the super quiet ride that this car gives you...I do love the sound of some Ive seen on You#ube mind...have thought about a custom system in the past....but the silence is priceless to me... :shutit:
