Over Heating

On my way to asda this afternoon the temperature on the is200 flew straight up to the red, I managed to reach the end of the bypass I was on and pull into a side street and shut off before I poped a core plug, bonnet up and slightly opened rad cap to release the pressure in the system, the car has the half hot half cold heater just like many more by all accounts, when the car had cooled down some I felt all the pipes and there was pleanty on hot water in the system except the 2 matrix pipes which are absolutely sold stiff, also with the car boiling over the temp from all heaters was blowing cold, so if the matrix is blocked like it looks like would this cause the car to over heat? And has anyone else had this happen, my plan tomorrow is to flush the matrix and then flush the cooling system as well as a new thermostat, do you think this would cure the problem? Thanks in advance

you could have air lock in your system.

yes bleed it then take it from there.

put a hose pipe in the matrix pipe to flush it & make sure the coolant pipes are warm & soft before you drive the car along with the radiator fan kicking in.
