Can anyone tell me,if the boot -lid on a '98 LS400, when released, using the pull-tab under the steering-wheel,is supposed to glide-up to fully-open position,on it's own,or,is it normal,to have to lift it manually, also, how difficult an operation is it,to remove and replace said dampers,if indeed, they need replacing?

I have just replaced mine, bought a pair from E-Bay

Removing and replacing them was easy, I was surprised just how easy.

They are held in place at each knuckle by a simple clip that pops off using a small screwdriver.

Raises just a little bit on open, then you lift it fully open.

Replacement is quite easy, no more time than to drink a cuppa.

Just a tad fiddly if you got shovels for hands.

Thanks for all your replies everyone,-I'd been unreliably informed recently, that my boot lid should, after release, open-up slowly, being damper-assisted,your posts have proved otherwise, many thanks for clearing that up.

Just sorry for you that you have to lift it manually, life can be so hard :)
