Tyre Sizes

Why are there 2 different sizes on these cars front 225/45/zr17 rear 245/45/zr17 is220d 2006

Hi some car manufacturers(eg BMW) especially with rear wheel drive cars tend to fit slightly wider tyres on the rear of some of their models for better handling or could be the previous owner decided to have slightly wider tyres on the rear,hope this helps.

This must be only car iav had with 2 different sizes always had Mercedes and thx for the info

They put wider rears on for extra stability yes , they tend not to put the same size on the fronts because the tyres may rub the inside arches .thats what Lexus told me .

The difference in sizes its not widely but highly!!!! Its 20mill higher then the front once hence the aerodynamics and sporty looks also.

I think you will find 245 is the width , 45 is the height in percentage , 17 is the wheel size , correct me if I'm wrong,.....Allan

That's right Aly...

Also, due to the previous owner or garage putting the wheels on the wrong axle's on my IS 220d...

I can confirm if the 245's are on the front they DO scrub the wheel arches when turning.

Put back on the right axles now though :)

Mine had the same when I bought the car although I did drive it approx. 200 miles home and then noticed it later on - the rears were on the front / fronts were on the back etc and the rotations wrong... I cant think why a garage / dealer would do this unless they had the car on a lift with all the wheels off and just did not realised they were different sized..?

Its an easy fix with no damage done
