Stone Chip Protection

Recommended Posts

Came across the transparent shields wrap...Anyone tried it?

Not sure if there are any other solutions to prevent stone chip damage..

The only paint protection film you want is by 3M. The others will eventually turn yellow and have problems. Bare in mind that these films are very expensive and financially, its cheaper to just spray the front of the car when the stone chips get really bad.

One solution you could try is to use CQUARTZUK. Its a liquid which is applied to the car and solidifies into liquid glass adding another coat on top of the car. Its very good stuff!

i'm certainly considering it.... 2000 miles in and the bonnets been resprayed already....

I've done 8k and I can only count a couple of very minor stone chips - I've got to say that the paint is holding up really well so far.

Sent an enquiry to 2 places near by asking if the plastic wrap would stick O.K. onto SUPAGARD treated paint, no reply from either, so obviously they've just had a share in the lottery and don't need the business. Maybe just go with the CQUARTZ treatment instead.

8 days left till I get behind the wheel..

If you go down the CQUARTZUK route make sure you do it yourself. Dont get anyone else to do it as its really not worth it. Its very simple and you can get it from cleanyourcar.co.uk with the reload spray to top the beading up.

3M is the only way to go. Any liquid that you apply is likely to be a sealant glaze - which won't protect against a stone flying into the car at 70mph and it will wear away....

3M is expensive - it used to come tailor cut, but to be honest it's no different to Vinyl wrapping. It's just that it's clear rather than coloured.

Only problem is that it leaves pitting on the car where the stones hit so the car will look all rough. Its very very difficult to sort this out compared to just spraying the front end.

The CQUARTZUK treatment is actually solid glass. Very tough stuff and does help in reducing scratches and the like. I think gtechniq also do a similiar product. Its not a sealant, more of a full car coating.

Seems pretty amazing stuff....might have to try it.

A good 3M type wrap company will remove all supagard etc before applying the film- -to be honest once installed the supagard is useless anyway, and chances are it will wear away in 6-12 months regardless of their sales speak.
