£2 per mile is pretty much an industry standard.
Roadside covers for roadside assistance, plus a 10 mile recovery.
Upgrading at the side of the road is normally £80, which inlcudes the first 50 miles free, then it should be £2 per mile there after.
The AA is quite a strange company, lot's of the phone operators will give contradicting info, plus they'll sometimes keep their jobs in the system for ages, then decide to hand them to a contractor, making the arrival time 2+ hours after the original call.
Although I don't have any cover (I'm in the industry) I would personally go for Green Flag.
