  1. Supersymmetric Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin , brilliant when Err indoors asks about SWKB I can fob her off with a load quantum mechanics problem solving guff . In case you haven't guessed my version is She Who Knows Best . :winky: Which reminds me I should be grouting and not sitting here .
  2. Using the LS400 and Auto combined ,gives 150 taxed and 93 on sorn ,for 1993 model year , so not a lot but a few more than the 94's .
  3. Sounds like you have the TPS adjustment pretty close . :) As for the sticky up thing (no smirking please) not being present , maybe it was one of the 50 plus improvements/changes made from the Mk1. When I do my TB clean in the autumn will have a look to see if my sticky up thing is missing also . According to SWKB it has been missing for years . :eerrrmm: Yes life is to short for OCD .
  4. The price was for the KYB spring and fitting ,he also fixed the exhaust blow which was an advisory so not bad . :) I do have spring compressors and have done them myself in the past ,but the way my back is at the moment didnt fancy it . I noticed that you had removed the TPS from your pic and thought oh dear , there is a How To on adjusting the TPS on the Lexl's website if you need some instruction . I did the same on my Mk3 , it was a bit of a performance getting it right again. A small fluid loss shouldn't cause any problems ,the system is self bleeding usually for a small coolant loss . Good idea to eat first , before firing it up .
  5. Hope the overnight soak has loosened all that sooty coke and the cleanup is going well ,no rain interruptions so far today is good . That TB you have on fleabay looks like a Mk1 version , it seems an odd colour ,like it has been shot blasted . I have just returned from the MOT with my beater ,needed a new front coil spring so am now £133 lighter in the wallet but have that warm glow knowing (fingers crossed )another year of trouble free low cost motoring awaits .
  6. Yes TB removal can be a little awkward the first time or two , for removing those horrid hose clips I use long handled 90 degree longnose pliers to shift them along the hose, then remove the hose with long handled hose pliers . If you dont have these then your squeeze and yank method will probably work eventually . Refitting is even more fun , trying to get the hose back in place . As I remove mine for cleaning every 18 months or so I have eliminated the problem by not refitting the hose to the TB , it never gets cold enough in the sunny southeast to be a problem . (if it is good enough for poor man mods it is ok for me ) :shutit:
  7. Right ,I see what you mean ,probably just a lighting thing though . Should that light be on if the battery is disconnected .
  8. Are we talking about the orange looking light with the red wire going to it Stuart ?
  9. It is apparently unwise to clean the MAF or KVAM on a first gen LS with solvent cleaners they are easily ruined ,I have used a gentle waft of compressed air with no ill effects . The later models have a different MAF that can be cleaned as normal , it is also unwise to fit K an N type air filters to first gens as the oil from them can also cause problems . As Mark says if you didnt have the symptoms before the cleaning it is most likely to be either some debris in the throttle body or a messed up MAF/KVAM . Lets hope it is something simple to fix .
  10. No they are not the same item the IACV is bolted on the front of the intake plenum ,to the right of the coil looking from the front just behind the plug wire bridge it has some hoses attached and what looks like a large black plastic cap . They do need cleaning sometimes , and can cause idling issues if the valve gets coked up . It can be a bit of PITA getting all the new wires to fit nicely like the originals ,the Denso set I fitted recently to my Mk3 came with a spare coil lead and medium length plug lead ,probably anticipating the possible snagging scenario .
  11. Glad to here you have it back together and running ok . Did the gasket fit ok ,agree Rock Auto are a good source for spares ,even with shipping they can be cheaper than over here. For the soldering you need 50/60watt from your station ,use a small tipped iron if you can working space is limited . With the old caps out use a large stainless pin ,heat it up as you gently push it through the leg holes in the circuit board to clear them of solder . Those like a small hat pin with plastic bit on the end are best for this , solder sucker and braid were not very effective for removing Japanese solder .
  12. Stuart you could try the ripple test as detailed in this link from the US site http://www.clublexus.com/forums/ls400/715345-how-to-check-your-ecu-without-removing-it-from-car-by-yamae.html to check if your ECU caps are ok ,it is fairly easy and will show if yours are ok or need replacing . The capacitor can be obtained from somewhere like Maplins if you don't have any lying around .
  13. Stuart if you haven't located the ECT sensor yet ,it is behind the top coil ,and underneath the plastic bridge piece that carries your nice new plug wires between the two banks , they usually have a green plug on them . This part is quite important as a reliable engine temperature reference is needed by the ECU for fuel trims etc . Although after market ones are available and maybe ok it is safest to source an OEM part from Toyota ,you will need a deep socket to remove and replace ,cannot remember the size offhand . Those curly black binding pieces on your original leads are positioned at stress points on the leads to help guide them and prevent fractures ,they are easily removed and can be reused on your new wires to serve the same function . Always a good idea to clean the throttle body if it is looking coked up . If you dont feel competent with a soldering iron and don't have access to a decent fairly high wattage soldering station with a small tipped iron then don't attempt the ECU caps replacement . You might be able to find a computer repair wizz kid or old style TV or audio repair shop that still employs some service people ,to do the job for a fee . Unfortunately with today's throw away society these people are becoming as rare as old LS's .
  14. Stuart ,I assume your wire readings are in k Ohm's ,if so they are all within the 25k maximum resistance as specified in the manual . Assuming your air filter is not clogged or exhaust blowing badly , you could try replacing the ECT sensor if you haven't already ,might help with emissions if it is sending the wrong info to the ECU . Replacing the ECU capacitors made a major difference to my beater Mk2 . Hope you soon get it all sorted .
  15. Are we talking about the wire from the coil that sits down by the battery , are you also changing the spark plug wires ?
  16. You shouldn't have to remove the battery on a Mk2 to change the plugs Stuart .
  17. It doesn't look worryingly low - my 400 does this sometimes - and on opening the cap the level rises. (Maybe I have an airlock or something.) In any case, we're talking about half a cupful if that. On a 400 it probably wouldn't be a worry ,but on an early 430 if that half a cup of coolant is lubricating the gearbox ,oh dear indeed . :o
  18. Dreaded MOT due next week on my beater ,so had grandson use Colin's Black Gasket Maker method to patch the Y pipe ,the stuff is easy to work with . So far it seems to have done the trick ,all nice and quiet again , shame about the front splitter though which he has wrecked beyond a simple duct tape repair driving onto his ramps . :iraqi-info-minister:
  19. Car looks good to me Katana , a little personalization is a good thing . You are right about the fog lights ,my sidelights are that bright .
  20. Good tour of Italy Malc ? at least you missed all the political crap that was going on here .
  21. You could try your local motor factors or Halfrauds , I never had any luck locally and ordered mine online even the Toyota garage didn't stock T1V .They use Dextron in everything apparently ,which didn't inspire much confidence ,they did have power steering reservoir O rings though so not a complete waste of time . Good to know you have a clean bill of health with your car ,hopefully your new cooler will help avoid any nasty transmission problems in the future .
