Reverse - High Revs For Little Movement

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I had a visit from Chips Away (don't ask) this morning and he asked me to move the car (2007 IS250 SEL petrol/auto) so that he could work on it.

I tried reversing up a gentle slope but I needed about 1500 revs just to get the car to creep backwards. It was cold (1deg C) and the engine was cold too. No wheel spin, no strange noises, just as if the reverse gear was slipping. No problem in Drive. The car is regularly serviced by Lexus. 107,000 miles on the clock.

Any ideas please?

Hill holder refusing to let go?

I had a similar issue with my Alfa. I parked on a hill facing up, when I went to roll the car down the hill to set off forward I couldn't get the hill holder to deactivate.

My Merc Estate (205,000 miles) has been doing that for 5 years Mike. I just do not park it on slopes.

The Aisin transmissions used in Lexus cars are very well protected against possible damage, there is a temperature sensor unit for the transmission oil which via the ECU limits the full scope of the gearbox until the fluid is up to its normal working temperature.

During this time the hydraulic pressure is held at a reduced level protecting the seals, probably the cause of your concerns and the transmission will not go into top gear.

Nothing to worry about just Japanese self preservation :)

If you fancy a bit of light reading (114 pages) feel free.
