Politically Correct Censorship

Censoring bad language, damaging comments etc is good but I've just noticed that my signature has been censored because my favourite quote contained the word "***". Presumably because it might be offensive to anyone who doesn't believe in a deity of any kind?! What about the offence that might cause me? Does the idea of being politically correct and not denegrating anyone's lifestyles and beliefs extend to everyone except believers in ***?

I hope you notice that I don't force my beliefs on anyone - I've not attempted

"bible-bashing" anyone here. If anyone did have questions then I'd answer them in private in u2u.

 Sorry rant over. :saint:

As this post was censored too (and very quickly) I'm guessing that its done automatically to censor blasphemy so I'm happy now. Sorry I'll get back in my box.... :bounce:

No.. Javadude.. you have got the wrong end of the stick

I added this becasue i noticed Blasphemy in some posts and being religious background myself I took offence to it.

I also did this to protect the feelings of other people.

If you want me to remove the cesor then thats entirely up to you.. but if these words are used blasphemous then try not to get to upset.

Here's the hypocrisy of it.

I cannot say *** but I CAN say Niger.....

Most servers have an editable text file of "banned" words, but I think having G.O.D. as one of them, is taking it a little too far.

For ***'s sake, Steve sort it out!!

Why don't you ask questions before coming to conclusions... Don't make a song and dance about everything until you have the proper facts why it was done.

It can make people very upset

I just want to give Steve a bit of support here, as it was me who helped set up the censoring system.

The aim behind the system is to ensure that we prevent any offense, of any kind, to the maximum amount of people.

Many people use the name of their deity as part of an expletive, and we decided that this may offend some people.

I for one, fully accept that some people may want to refer to their deity in a non-offensive manner, but we took the view that using an automated system would censor as much profanity as is practical, without the need for every post to be read in detail.

I apologise if this has offended you in any way JD.

GRiM - I really think that you should develop an understanding of the effort and committment that is required to run a site like this, and not be so eager to criticise.

Kind regards

Rod

No - now I see why I completely agree with your comments and the idea of keeping it censored. Thanks! :bounce:

I agree with censorship and would rather it cut out things which are meant perfectly innocently that let anything through which should not be there.

At my office I do a lot of expert witness work and have a lot of statemnts etc sent to me re legal cases. It's amazing how often emails are bounced back to solicitors saying their email contains inappropriate language but they are never upset ny it.

I agree 100% with the censorship.

Remember that this is a public face of the Club and as such represents the Club.

Additionally there are 100's of forums on the internet that I would not frequent as they have 'full free speech' which is often devoid of intelligent debate and full of abuse and name calling.

We do not need to swear to express ourselves, and with censorship in place for those that forget themselves, we keep this site such that people can happily let their children view the content.

We all know you hear swearing everyday - but I don't want to hear it here, it does not convey a friendly or professional feel.

We have the same system on the Honda-R forum only instead of stars, it replaces words with new ones - like 'cheesy poof' and 'cake' - can mean that someone breaking the rules will find their post suddenly sounds rather amusing!

I'd just as soon not see the word Ni g g er appear on the site or any permutations thereof. I'm not really that sensitive to racial abuse (I'm of Jamaican origin) but if I thought it was the everday language of Lexus owners, I would go back to an alternative brand so as not to be tarred with the same brush...:regan:

I do think there is a place for political correctness and I have seen sites like honda r where they change swear words like effing for pudding. it works very well as it discourages persistent offenders.

Yawn, Yawn, Yawn

I see this board is going the way of so many that have gone before it

get a ******* life people

its about cars, not about anything else, go and argue with the wife or something and post something interesting.

BTW my mates next door neighbour is the chairman if the de-lorean owners club and he has 3 of them - i'm gonna get him to develop a flux-capacitor for the IS. I think it foolish he lives in a cul-de-sac, there's no ****ing way he'll get to the required 88mph.......

Adeyb

If you do not like what you read then why do you bother reading all the posts. If you do not like the way the forum is structured and how it is moderated then I suggest you go somehwere else.

No one asked you for you opinion on what you think on the forum censorhip. So why bother to reply... go away and read something more interesting.

There is no need for bad language in this club.. get a life or not.. it is the face of the club and those who represent it... not only that... it's rude.

Why does your post remind of something from .net??? :?:

I am a professional webmaster - and like things to be done properly - I was once most impressed by all the goings on here

now it does appear to be going the way of many other boards that rabbit on about loads of guff (was G u f f censored?)

carry on. have fun! and actually I cant believe I replied now...i need not remind everyone that arguing on the internet is like winning gold in the special olympics...........

I am sorry.. i don't catch your drift... sharing information in a professional manner is just hot air?

Or should we swear at other to make it more interesting?

Like i said earlier.. you know what to do.. but you still return.

This thread is toast

Actually adeyb - I don't think you quite get it.

I am still impressed by this place, and if it degenerated into a foul-mouthed abusive forum, I would not frequent it anymore.

Also while we have all come here due to Lexus, it is about so much more than cars! Hence why there are so many posts in the General section. What you have here is a friendly Club with friendly people who like to talk cars and help each other out with queries etc. BUT also have other interests in life and that includes socialising with this friendly group.

I have no idea why you felt compeled to chip in with a retort suggesting the people around here need to 'get a life' - I for one am perfectly content with my life - which is perhaps why I don't feel the need to abuse others. Perhaps you should do some lifestyle thinking yourself?
