Look like a variety of hoverfly, quite harmless. They are marked like wasps and have a "false" sting so that birds are not tempted to eat them.  :blink:

But where did the chavved up fly come from :question:

i just had some like that with egg fried rice......worried :crybaby:

Don't worry Mr Morse says they are harmless :D

Hoverflies have been around for millions of years....they just grow bigger when the conditions are optimised, like all this hot weather over the past 2 weeks.

BTW this beastie is a mere baby compared to some of the monsters I see in Africa :nuke:

It's a giant wood wasp. That "sting" is actually an ovipositor, used for laying eggs in wood.

Mind you, I'd sooner be stung than end up with a wasp's nest in my arm!

:offtopic: Manager of an oilfield drilling equipment company, lived in several West African countries since 1996. Back in the UK for a while.
