Hoverflies have been around for millions of years....they just grow bigger when the conditions are optimised, like all this hot weather over the past 2 weeks.

BTW this beastie is a mere baby compared to some of the monsters I see in Africa

Looks like it could be a Privet Hawk Moth. Bit hard to say in that condition but the banding is simalr

It's a giant wood wasp. That "sting" is actually an ovipositor, used for laying eggs in wood.

Mind you, I'd sooner be stung than end up with a wasp's nest in my arm!
