I have decided to put the old nail in for an MOT test tomorrow (£25). She's currently tested until June,but I want to make sure she will pass before I spend my hard earned on a timing belt replacement. She has no service history so don't know if she got her second belt at 120,000. She is now on 132,000. Didn't want to spend billions on replacing the belt,only for her to fail the MOT big time a few months later. By the way I noticed a green MK4 on fleabay earlier reg. no. R449 FFG,mine is R49 FFG and a MK3. How weird is that?. Keep you posted. Ta ta.

Couple of thoughts - is it possible to test that early? If it fails on sometihng they regard as dangerous you will only be able to drive it home or to a garage for repair. (correct me if I'm wrong on these points)

I think if they spot something dangerous,I'd rather know about it rather than drive around for six months not knowing!.

You do know that with the V5 etc you can check the prior MOT Advisories ?

Yes,thank you. I already have the print out going back several years. Only advisories last year were for both rear tyres getting close to the limit,and they were both replaced.

then there shouldn't be anything at all serious immediate to worry about, like steering and suspension stuff including upper control arms ... everything else should be a non-event ........ hopes !!

Well she failed (as expected),but just on two tyres - and that's all!. Advised on the other two tyres-rear trailing arms,slight play and rear brake pads low. Could have been a lot worse.

So I suppose I now have to start refurbing the wheels that a noted member donated,get the new tyres put on,re-MOT her,get the cam belt done,oil and filter change,then over the next few months do the rear brake pads and look in to these rear trailing arm things (bound to be an arm and a leg).

I'm still getting this clonking too despite having the anti-roll bar bushes done (an earlier thread).But at least I now know that it's not something dangerous causing it.

well done .......... so had you just replaced visibly worn out tyres then it would have passed ok with some Advisories to do over the coming months :geek:

The question now is - do I get good quality 'part worns' or new cheapo Chinese budgets. I know the tyre issue has been discussed a lot on here and a lot of people like Falken's. Halfrauds can do a set of Falken Ziex's or Kumho KH31's for a similar price of around £380. Or I could get a set of part worn Michelin/Dunlop's with plenty of meat on for around £175 plus fitting,so around £230 all in. Halfrauds also do a set of something nasty for £220 fitted!. I'm tending to lean towards the part worn's at the moment,but that could all change........

Absolutely - but if it had failed on emmissions or just slight blow (as mine did earlier this year) it can be a nightmare to discover cause and may be a very costly job to fix. replacement Cats etc.

Congratulations on the car passing. I wanted to buy Maxxi tyres for the car but they don't sell them for this wheel size. Had them all round on my S Class and rather liked them. Reasonably priced also

I have recently fitted a pair of Neuton NT8000 tyres on the front of my silver LS400 to replace the Continental tyres that were on the car when I bought it. They are made in Indonesia by Yokahama.

I did quite a bit of reading up on tyres before I bought them and they had some good reviews on www.tyrereviews.co.uk - take a look.

I could not find any local stockists but they are available online either from LoveTyres or from Neo Brothers (who are Saab specialists). The tyres are priced at about £64-£65 each. I bought the pair I have had fitted from LoveTyres and I think the delivery was about £8 for the pair. Buying a single tyre may be cheaper at Neo Brothers. I saw one recently advertised by them on eBay for just under £69 including delivery.

I have been pleased with the tyres so far, although I have not had them on long. But my son, who does a lot more miles than I do, has had some on his Volvo V70 estate for about a year now and has been pleased with them too.

I would never fit cheap chinese tyres on my cars. They may look pretty good on labels but steer clear! Also Halfords is the last place on earth to shop for tyres :) Go for part worn or new set of Falkens.

Always buy good tyres - sure research for the best model to fit your requirements but do not go cheap/crap. I paid £165 per corner for my winter tyres and by heck they are worth it. Brilliant performance in the winter and wet weather.

Could not agree more- no cutting corners here. Maybe on a cheap fiesta yes, but not on the 4+ litre rwd beasts we all love so much :rolleyes:

I was considering Falkens as a lot of members like them,but they always seem to score low on the economy tests. Can get a set of Nexens for £312 fitted. Or Maxxis for £400 or............ AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH...............

Done it. I've ordered a set of Falken ZE-912's. £280 for the four delivered. Plus about £50 for fitting I suppose,brings it to a price that I would have paid for something like Nexen/Nankang etc. I think they will suit my style of driving (vicars wife) and supposedly last a long time,and most importantly should be reasonably quiet. Right,lets get on with refurbing those alloys............

I recently paid just about £100 a corner for my Falkens ...... all-up, fitting, balancing, new valves, disposal and whatever else is involved .......... at Treadmark Tyres in Canterbury.

And it was there 3.5 years ago that they laser re-aligned my tracking, camber and whatever else the high tech kit shows up needed doing at the time ..... with the appropriate trained expert to do the job, analyse and adjust etc

They gave me the pretty coloured printouts showing before and after too.

. I think at that time it cost me about £50 or so, might be more now as it was 3.5 yrs ago and I guess early days in this technology being readily available too.
