Anyone Had Warped Mintex Discs From Prolex?

Hi all

Back in March I fitted a pair of Mintex grooved discs and Mintex pads to the front of my IS200. I sourced these from ProLex-UK.

Only four months later I've been suffering juddering on braking. My dealer tells me the nearest disc is warped (0.09mm) and the offside is slightly warped (0.04).

Has anybody else had this problem with grooved Mintex discs?

I do average mileage, don't brake heavily and dont drive fast so I'm a bit concerned that these have warped so quickly.

After 4 momths on the car, I presume ProLex will change them for me (just waiting for a response)

did you correctly bed in the new discs and pads.........

Discs do not warp from Normal use...FACT, infact Discs dont actually warp. you would have to have stopped, then sat with your foot on the brake to induce enough local heat to cause transfer of material from the pad to the disc surface.

its a misconception that discs actually warp, they dont, unless they are a really cheap make or brand, which i dont think Mintex are.

what happenes is the surface material from the pad is transferred to the surface of the disc, this is what feels like warped discs when you brake.

Most disc "warping" is caused through incorrect bed in or from sitting with your foot on the brake after a stop.

the discs were bedded in properly and the hub cleaned up before fitting. I've got a mate who is an experienced mechanic - he doesn't cut corners!

I called into Lexus Reading to check the discs - they usually give me good service so I'm giving them benefit of the doubt here.

They reckon nearside is 0.09 mm out and offside is 0.04 mm out - they also say that you'll feel a judder above 0.05mm. Anyone thinks this sounds fair?

Chris,

I have had no email from you so assume that this is your attempt to contact Prolex-UK.

We have sold over 20 sets of this disc since last August with not one problem.

I do know that as the disc is free floating the tightening sequence is critical and has caused warping on all types of discs

Please email me at daveellen AT prolex-uk DOT com with your order number & payment details so I can look into this matter properly.

Just a thought, but if thats the case, how do you bed in discs on an auto

steady reductions in speed..., never actually stomping on the brakes and coming to a complete stop

Well i never knew that! it makes perfect sence, high friction embeded on the disc ver friction from the pads generating the 'grab' effect and judder. Seems a bit unfair that prolex now have to except this as a warranty claim.

Had an email from Chris.........

now contacting Mintex

Hi Dave,

Thanks for looking into this for me.

One question... you say the tightening sequence is critical - as the disc is floating I presume you are talking about the tightening sequence of the wheel nuts, am I right? If so, I can think of at least one occassion when I didnt tighten the nuts myself (ie when I put two new tyres on at a Tyre dealer).

why is it unfair? I drove the car quite happily for 4 years on the original discs and didn't get any judder due to the phenomena of pad material transferring to the disc. I only moved to the Mintex discs and pads because people were raving about them on these forums. I had them fitted professionally (as I said before, by an experienced mechanic who happens to be a mate) and have driven the car exactly as I did before. So, tell me what I did wrong?

Luckily, I always tighten as opposites. However, I can't put hand on heart and say that the tyre dealer did the same (I didn't watch them that closely), but they aren't cowboys so I'd hope they did opposites too.

Thanks for checking this out for me, much appreciated.

technically you cant tighten opposites on a five stud fitment if you imagine how you draw a star as a child if u put that idea over the studs thats how you should tighten them in a clockwise movement

May be a bit granny eggs suck but despite the fact i have to use torque sequences at work i do tend to forget when i get to the car especially when i am in a rush
