  1. I used to have a 1990 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0i, the CD model with the fake wood and electric windows on the back, when I did retire it because the boot was starting to fall out, it had done about 230,000 miles on the original engine. Admitidely, it used to turn oil into cream cheese after 1,000 miles but it hung in there in the end.
  2. Hi there people. I am going to be putting in my HID kit in the next week or so. Thanks again for the advice on the colour coding of wires to the ballast. What I was wondering was if anyone has put HID's in a Mk2 GS300, where did you locate your ballasts? If someone could put a pic up showing me where they have located theirs I would very much appreciate it. Thanks again.
  3. What year is it? 2001 How long have you owned it? 18 Months Did it come with Full Lexus History? Yes Have you had any problems with the ABS pump? No and fingers crossed I don't in the future.
  4. I'm a driving instructor who teaches in an automatic. It is a Nissan Micra and has done more miles over the 6 years of use that some cars do in a life time. It will hold itself on very steep for just long enough for my pupils to get on the gas pedal without it rolling backwards. My GS300 which has hardly got warm in it's life time will not hold itself at all. In my experience of driving many automatics, it depends on the car and the size and weight of it. Some semi-auto's like Toyota's MMT and Vauxhall's easy-tronic will not creep at all, let alone hold themselves on a hill.
  5. OK lads. Thanks for the advice. So long as I don't end up in a pile of ash I shall stick some pics up of what they look like. Cheers again for the advice.
  6. Hi People My HID kit for my GS300 turned up today and I can't wait to fit it but I have notived a problem. The colour of the wires on the car loom are white and red but the wires on the ballast are black and red. Would I be right in assuming that red would go to red and white would go to black? I just don't fancy blowing anything up. The kit I bought from ebay are the rebranded philips ballasts and bulbs so hopefully I have got a good kit for my £95 quid. Discs and pads are next Mr Prolex. Your help would be much appreciated. Cheers.
  7. I am thinking of getting a kit from ebay which is the rebadged Philips kit for my 2001 GS300. Just to check though, do I need the 9006 type? I've got a Bi-Xenon HID kit on my 2000 Nissan Micra driving school car and to be honest, there ain't much of a difference between dipped and main beam. The only thing I have to watch out for is when my pupils first use the indicator stalk, some have a habbit of pulling it towards them blinding people coming towards me B) . The joys of teaching people to drive.
  8. Many thanks for your opinions on the discs. Prolex, my service isn't due till December so I will throw an order your way in October time. Unless I end up cooking the brakes before then. Many thanks for your opinions. Always helpfull.
  9. Hi People. My GS300 isn't due a service till December but as with all things Lexus and using a main dealer, I thought I would start saving now . The last service, they said the front discs would be due for replacement at the 7 year service which is coming up. I supplied my own oil for the last service which they did not use but I never got charged for for them using their own oil, but that's another story :tsktsk: . What I was basically wondering has anybody used the Prolex-UK Stage 1 Brake upgrade kit as I was wondering would it be much better than the standard discs and pads. Also, would Lexus be happy fitting this kit rather than using their own discs and pads as I am no mechanic? Cheers.
  10. My 2001 GS300 had it's 60,000 service in December 2006. When I asked about the cambelt, they said every 6 years or 100,000 miles. I didn't want to chance it so I coughed up and had it done. With the cambelt, plugs, major service, air con service, other drive belt etc it came to £1200 with discount. The cambelt change at a Lexus dealer was only a couple of hundred pounds but bear this in mind, I used to run a Peugeot 206 1.9 diesel as a driving school car and a cambelt change at a Peugeot dealer almost left me £900 worse off. As these are apparently interference engines (pistons smash into valves) I would defanitly get it done.
  11. I have been in the market now for a few months looking for an LS430. I'd like one in metalic black with either a grey or black interior. So far, the second hand section on the Lexus web site hasn't been turning up anything new for a while now. The only time I have looked at a couple of LS's, near enough the colour I want, they have both been smoked in . I know it is a good haggling point but I don't want to be spending all that money on an ex ash tray . Is it worth looking outside the dealer network? I'm after a 53 plate or newer with no more than 45 thousand miles. I don't really want to go over £25,000. Any sugestions?
  12. At present, I am in the market for an LS430 and have driven a couple. I havn't bought either one because the previous owners have snoked in them but one had Bridgestone Turanzers and the other had Michelin Piolot Sports. I found the one with the Michelin's quiter and had more grip but the Bridgestones were noisier.
  13. Thanks for your reply. I'm not too botherd about having to pay the extra tax on petrol etc. I think it comes with the territory. I had a go in a GS450h. It is a damn quick car but you do loose a fair amount of boot space apparantly. Also, being brought up in Australia where almost everyone had a V8, it is what I'm looking forward too the most. I just can't make my mind up between the GS and the LS.
  14. I've had my 2001 GS300 SE Nav now for about a year and a half. It has performed perfectly, and appart from normal servicing, two front tyres and an upgrade satnav dvd, I am most happy with it. However, I have a bit of a dilemma. I had a drive in a new GS430 at a Lexus open day and really enjoyed the power, refinement etc. I have also had a go in the LS430 as well. Even quieter, didn't seem much slower, more toys etc. As I am now thinking of changing my GS for either with the v8 engine, I just can't seem to make my mind up about the new GS or the LS. I just wonderd, given the choice, what would you lot choose?
  15. I like the look of your HID's. I'm a driving instructor and I have fitted a pair of Bi-Xenon HID's to my Nissan Micra driving school car. The difference has been amazing. When they are new, they do look a bit blue, but the more you use them and the older they get, they get a little more whiter. Also, when you first turn them on they are more blue than usuall till they warm up. The bulbs and ballasts in my Micra are now over three years old and touch wood, have given me no problems at all. I was going to get the kit for my 2001 GS300 but I've had a go in a 2004 LS430 and I'm slightly hooked. I'm going to save the pennies for my LS.
  16. I have a 2001 GS300 with the DVD Satnav. I have just bought a disc from Lexus Hatfield for £120. I must admit, I havn't looked to see if there is a post code search function, but I do recomend that you buy an updated disc. Mine now seems to be quicker, a bit more colourfull and I now prefer it to my Tom Tom. Also, shop around different Lexus dealers for your upgrade disc. Lexus Woodford wanted £220. The saving made goes towards my LS430 saving fund.
  17. Hi Thanks for your help with the tyres. I got a pair of Michelin piolot sports, 234/45/zr17's from costco in the end, worked out at £200 for the pair. Had a local tyre place fit them for £20. Now it seems alot more stable and doesn't seem to pull when you change lanes.
  18. Hi I currently own a 2001 GS300 Navi. I want to change to a ls430, possibly on a 53 or an 04 plate. Just a quick question though, appart from projector headlights, what are the differences between the slightly older model and the new model? I had a drive today in a 53 plate with 45,000 miles. It had all the kit, electric rear seats, fridge etc, compleatly blew me away. I've never driven such an under streesed car in my life. Made my GS300 feel a bit rattely. Your help would be much appreciated.
  19. I am off tyre shopping on the weekend and just wonderd what peoples opinions are on different makes. I currently have 17 inch Bridgestone Potenza's fitted to my 2001 GS300. The geometry was adjusted at the last service in december but now my front tyres are shot. Is it worth sticking with the Bridgestone's or shall I get a pair of Michelin Piolot sports, what about Dunlop's? I'm not too worried about price, I just want what's best for my Lexus.
  20. Well thanks for the info lads. I might as well keep it as it left the factory. It will always be serviced at Lexus so the air filter will be replaced as and when. Might as well hold out till I get a 430. Thanks anyway.
  21. I have a 2001 GS300 SE. I am thinking of replacing the standard air filter with a panel type by K&N or some other manyfacturer. Is it worth doing and if so, which one would be the best. What sort of difference would it make? Thanks again.
  22. I have had my 2001 GS300 for a year and a half. It is my first Lexus. I did have a go in an IS200 auto but much preferd the GS300. I found it smoother, quiter and much quicker. When I get bored of this one, it will defanitly be the GS430 next. I had a go in a new one at the Lexus open day. It made my GS300 feel slow. Go for the 430 and you won't regret it at all.
  23. I have a 2001 gs300 (y reg) with DVD nav. Managed to eject mine and type the numbers on the disc into the Lexus Map Updates site. It didn't recognise these numbers. Did anyone else have these problems? I don't fancy spending anymore money at Lexus as I have just spent £1200 on it's service this week and now I'm skint.
  24. On my 2001 GS300 with DVD sat nav, to get to the unit, you have to remove the two screws that are located at either side of the unit. Once removed, the unit can be tilted up so you can get to the eject button. It's not too much of a pain to do but don't drop the screws as they are a pain to retrieve.
