  1. It is not uncommon for modern batteries to need replacing after this period. Unlike the good old fashioned type, modern batteries give little if any warning of failure. I found out when my (now ex) wife rang at 6pm one evening from the centre of Doncaster, to say her car wouldn't start. After the 70 mile journey, we abandoned the car, a 4 year old Clio oil burner. The following day I borrowed a fixed towing bar and fetched the car. The only fault was a totally dead battery ie not just flat, but deceased.
  2. Hi. Its most certainly to do with the wheel bearing work as the caliper will have been removed. They may not have put the pads back in the same position so it will take time for them to bed-in again. They may not have torqued everything back correctly. They may have disturbed the balancing weights - the alloy ones stick on the inside and can be removed quite easily. I would ask them to chech these issues. I very much doubt its warped disc/s.
  3. Hi and congratulations. Without doubt the timing belt needs doing, not on miles but age. The water pump also should be done at the same time. It cost me £500 including parts. There is a lot of work to do to get to it per http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/engine/timingbelt.html The parts themselves are not that expensive. I can't recall where mine came from as its been awhile but a search on this forum or the engine and transmission forum may well provide a relatively recent answer.
  4. You will probably be best sending a private message to the guys above who seem to be abreast of the technology, similarly pm the guys who have made similar posts in the audio forum. I can understand your reservations even though I dont use an ipod. If I did, I would want the functionality in my new car. I never thought that maybe I could have my entire itunes library available in the car. There again, I do listen to the radio 24/7. Hope you resolve the issue and step up to a Lexus.
  5. Different services involve different work. You wouldn't change the cambelt at every service, or the coolant or the brake fluid. It will be worthwhile finding out if the 60k service has covered whatever should have been done between the 10k service and now. How old is the car?
  6. Isn't that giving someone "the bird"? LOL! Didn't know my minamilistic gesture had a name :duh:
  7. I usually raise a single finger to other LS400 drivers in acknowledgement. According to my daughter, this gesture is a "bloke" thing. I'd be up for any co-ordinated idea.
  8. Hi and welcome to LOC. There is only 1 choice of marque - Lexus! However, my advice to anyone buying a car is to buy only Japanese or German. The Passat would be fine. Its not a Lexus tho'.
  9. Welcome. This is a good site.
  10. Hi. There have been numerous posts on this subject, so have a search. If I had a built in sat nav I would want it to work even though a free standing unit may be better.
  11. Another post with no reply so hope this is useful. In the absense of the ability to force an LS430 owner to reply, I suggest that you use the search facility on this forum and also on the audio forum (lower down the list when you log in). I am not familiar with the layout of the 430 although I would hazard a guess that it is similar in that there are no visible screws. This tutorial may give you some clues/confidence http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/audio/headunit.html
  12. Hi. In the (current) absense of a more informative reply. The question pops up from time to time so it will be worth while using the search facility. You will have to play around with differnt terms as "mechanic" is likely to be too broad. London or Norholt might be a start.
  13. Hi New Club Member and welcome. Very good question. In the main the answer is yes although when it arrived it no doubt had the Jap audio system. I think Steve2006 has a Celsior and is very knowledgable. You could look at his profile and then view threads/posts from there. You could search using import or celsior. You could wait until Steve2006 logs in and replies or you could pm him. You have a very fine car in any case. Mine's a '95 MKIII so I can vouch for that.
  14. Welcome to LOC. Its a great community and a massive resource.
  15. Buy it and adore it. Its that simple. There are a few known faults but rather less than any other marque/model. Engines are good for upwards of 300k and then some. My MKIII recently did 120 miles towing a trailer with an escort estate on it and returned over 25 mpg. Solo on a long run 32 is typical BUT if you enter boy-racer mode it will be mid-teens. If you want comfort, luxury and power this is the car for you.
  16. Hi and welcome to the forum. If it aint broke, dont fix it. These engines are very good and not known for building up loads of c--p. You could consider an oil flush rather than dismantling the sump. Before you take any action have a look at this http://www.carbibles.com/engineoil_bible.html which contains comprehensive advice. Note there is a warning towards the end of the article. I would sooner buy some cheap oil, but of the correct viscosity, and fill with this without changing the filter. Run this for a few miles, preferably getting the engine well warm, before doing an oil and filter change in the usual way. Being a Yorkshire man, I would save the hardly used oil for the oil can. Regarding the other work you propose, apart from visual inspection of everything in the vicinity, you could also look at distributor caps and rotor arms and HT leads.
  17. Interesting question which is difficult to answer especially as Ive been out of that business for some time. In general terms the answer is a small engined popular make and model with good security(especially the immobiliser) with cheap and readily available parts with no modifications of any nature and few manufacturer extras in a solid colour. Anything else is driver/owner related and even the cheapest to insure on paper can become very expensive with the variables that throws up drink convictions etc etc.
  18. As I have said before (maybe on this thread - its been going on a while) as a former insurance broker, and former insurance company employee, whilst all the obvious details are considered there are other factors such as that company's particular claims experience with that car/area/gender/etc and how much it wants business. New business is good for immediate cashflow so rates today may be low to grab business. Conversley, at any time when cashflow is already good, rates often rise to prevent further business in that class or to only secure high quality business. Driving and personal claims record are but one small part of the overall calculation. This is why it appears totally illogical to the insuring public and why getting a quote every year is important. Of course another issue is the low headline rate, say on-line, until you get to a question which - if answered truthfully - results in a conversation because it doesn't fit the "profile" and the resultant premium is higher than the on-line quote. The best response I ever had with the follow-up phone call was "you do realise it's a 4 litre car, sir?" I put the phone down. Anyway, I'm rammbling on as long as this thread. Man in pub he say his insurance is the best. For him. Today. Maybe. Unlikely actually.
  19. Hi Firstly, have a look at the GS300 forum and search it for example "owners manual." When you have tried various different terms without success (and it is a massive resouce) try posting your query in that forum, rather than in here.
