  1. if you're still looking at that car Mk1 has 15" wheels and tyres ( brakes too ) and I think one less spoke in the wheels too than the Mk2 which has 16" wheels and tyres, brakes etc Malc
  2. don't they have coils to be rewound too and stuff like that ? not just simply a set of £2 brushes I bet ! Otherwise my indy would have just replaced the brushes and saved me £296 and added 10 mins to his labour cost ......... he charges me parts at cost price to him I think our alternators are a little buried down in the depths, unlike the Honda Legend he recently changed which was a doddle, lying almost on the top and easy peasy to deal with Malc our Honda Legend alternator lasted about 50% the life of my Lexus one
  3. ah, why didn't you look under the word " hood " ? for the engine bonnet ................ " engine bonnet " who on earth would look for that phraseology for heavens sake teutonic translationing no doubt Malc
  4. mine's never suffered ( any of the three ) with front brake discs warping, they've been dealt with properly at the outset ! Find it amazing that the last owner ? ran the car with a bad front tyre shown up in the MOT some 3500 miles before that tyre became a dangerous failure at MOT. That's poor maintenance ............. and after 6 months I would want a new MOT on purchase now I would certainly be checking out all the usual stuff, like the cambelt pulleys and waterpump have been seen to as appropriate and if not within the last 60k miles then factor in @£800 to deal with that alone These cars always polish up to near perfection so just make sure everything else is good too, especially all the inside lights and dash stuff works ok, temp gauge etc the steering column, when faulty these age cars is often a 20p washer that's the solution Also I don't know if the pas pipework, reservoir etc is fine too, and won't ever leak on the alternator positioning, on my Mk1 it did but on my Mk3 never yours looks like it's a Mk2 maybe being June 93 but maybe not..... it's def not a Mk3 good luck with your viewing tomorrow Malc
  5. collected and oh how I have missed her this last week glad she's back, total cost £467.88 Auto Electric Co Alternator £298.48 ( exchange ) Yuasa battery £79.40 Labour content £90 Malc just out of curiosity they also supply dynamos ( bloody expensive for some ) and replacement brushes at sub £2 to almost a heady £5 ( not the 2/6 pence I remember from aeons ago )
  6. take out brilliant RAC full breakdown etc cover happened to me last Friday at 227k miles .......... paid for taxi and car recovery to my indy mechanic, collecting the car fixed today My Honda Legend, a couple of months ago the alternator failed at about 119k miles, but bang outside the house in daylight RAC recovered the car to my indy likewise, some 50 miles away You cannot predict alternator failure ( I think ??? ) so just take precautions to protect yourself for when it does just go ' pop ' Malc
  7. on mine there was clearly some 40k life left in the driver's side compared to the nearside at that time ........ a lifetime for some driver's but only 3 years for me as i use my car every day, about 12 / 15k miles a year It's your preference to replace in pairs but rest assured, with the UCAs that's not necessary best wishes whatever Malc
  8. are you absolutely certain they really do need replacing ? Mine needed replacing piecemeal ...... was it the MOT Tester that advised this one front UCA went at 173k, nearside front and the most wearing it seems, I replaced that with BluePrint and that failed at about 42k miles later at the time I NEEDED to replace the other side front and for which fortunately Amayama had both sides available ( Toyota stamp impressed parts too) I replaced the rear UCAs similarly Don't think that if the one side needs replacing that they both do at the same time, these are incredibly long wearing parts individually Malc
  9. you're very very unforunate to need welding in this location ( or indeed any on your 98 car ) I have never read of any of this needed doing, the boot channel rust has only ever been surface and responded ok to cleaning-up etc might some sort of filler be enough to deal with the main problems I wonder good luck with it whatever Malc
  10. mine did NOT suffer from any pas leakage from anywhere ....... just so's you all know the Mk3 seems immune from this earlier catastrophic pas unit positioning Malc
  11. I know it's " old hat " now but the Mk3 starter motor was the subject of a free recall all those moons back when i bought my car in 2011 from ACLex on here I did ask Lexus if it had been changed and they confirmed there was nothing outstanding Malc
  12. good news, collecting the up and running Ls400 tomorrow, all done, final bill about £467 I think I'll confirm tomorrow Relief all round today I would have investigated specifically the Amayama route but didn't wish to wait a couple of weeks longer for the steed so missed her, the Honda Legend is a great car but it's not really " me " Malc
  13. I hope Dudley Trading Standards don't leave it there and take some positive remedial action for the initial selling of a decrepit car Malc
  14. if by this you mean UCAs then bought my 4 from Amayama and at about 50% overall of the UK Lexus / Toyota price ( after carriage Customs Duty VAT etc ) about £250 each NOW I'm buying a new alternator for mine and the Toyota price is emerging at £562 Blue Print at £402 and a Auto Electrics company at £301 back to my first failed UCA .... My UCA from BluePrint was initially bought and only lasted 42k miles, a great disappointment so I'm not buying a BluePrint alternator thinking they don't actually manufacture stuff, just Brand it up and mark-up accordingly ... original stamped UCAs Toyota from Amayama were the way forward The new Toyota battery i bought last January that has been cooked is a Yusua ? and i have anew one of these at about the same price as Toyota branded from the main dealer so i could have bought again but my indy mechanic is sorting this all out ok Toyota Main Dealer was BRILLIANT with the new battery last January letting me have it at trade price with free fitting on a cold dark winter's day ( about £78 ) WIPER RUBBERS I always bought replacements from the Toyota main dealer BUT the last one's seemd to fail within a year or so, they used to last several years and 10 s of thousands of miles not inexpensive for sure, so this last cheapy set at £8.50 and have lasted long enough already I think maybe the stock of rubber is the age of the last model of that Mk car .......... but I may be wrong and always cherished the Lexus / Toyota wiper rubbers as they really did last many many years ..... until quite recently Hope yours last for several years and 30k miles at least Malc
  15. and I thought the Honda quote at @£400 for the glass alone was a tad too expensive 😠 Malc
  16. so my car's now with my mechanic for autopsy there are 3 suggested alternator options for my specific car so he's got to check out all the numbers to make sure he gets the correct replacement AND it's a bugger but the brand new Toyota battery put on last January has cooked / well at least totally died in the event too no amount of recharging will bring it back to life sadly I'll keep you posted Malc
  17. I had this mentioned to me when replacing a broken windscreen ( or two ) to try to get the correct replacement Malc
  18. quite frankly I'm not at all surprised it's lasted 227k miles My Mk1 Ls400 I changed the alternator when it blew out at about 150k miles following the age old pas O ring issue leakage and there was little doubt then that was the original alternator this upset me tbh it only having lasted a short mileage, but accepted that cars do break down sometimes, even fabulous Ls400s I had thatcar since about 100kmiles and would have been really really upset if it had gone before or at that time I think 227k miles is fair wear and tear and any longer would have been a bonus in life maybe ............ a little longer would have been happier though I don;t doubt that original Lexus equipment could easily last so well Malc
  19. I can be sure for sure owned her 8.5 years and the Full Lexus Service History for 123k miles prior showed no alternator change Malc
  20. Jan 2018 £20.49 incl postage etc bespoke made to my template by ................. Car Door Mirror Shop 0208 810 8586 email: orders @cardoormirrors.com brilliant quick turnaround and just purrfect too Malc good luck but better than putting up with a misted door mirror glass or worse still, broken
  21. I would NEVER use them again, I found their behaviour totally unacceptable too I'll find my mirror stuff for you Malc
  22. Best wishes with your new present to yourself, it's great if you're happy to just cover the cracked glass with another then there are good suppliers out there too for a '' stick-on ' one I've had one for my Honda Legend, they bespoke cut to your template ok if they don't have a stock item, not heated glass though but I can give you the number etc of the people that provided for me you might of course live with it as have prior owners or maybe go through the eye-watering expense of a genuine replacement Malc
