  1. you can see if compressor working under bonnet, driven by fanbelt, you can see when clutch comes in,just cut the temp down on dash press auto have a look under bonnet then turn a/c off,you should see the difference on compressor if its working i leave mine on all the time on auto much better for a/c.i was told to do that by an engineer years ago, keeps everything working leave it on 20/21 all year round helps with demisting in winter as well
  2. on my older lexus there were two electric fans in front of rad, this one mk4 has the air con rad /condenser then gap and then rad ,and then the viscous fan,no fan in front,i will have to investigate further the first time it got hot it was getting close to the red,i just turned the air con off last time,to stop it getting too hot,id rather cook than the engine
  3. just an update,iv drained system ,fitted new stat, flushed rad and system out,i have run hosepipe thro all rad fins the ac one and rad, refilled system,as per correct procedure, and its stayed at the correct level ever since, the engine temp stays on the second mark on gauge,i done 60 miles on fri no probs, with ac on ,which incidentally seems to be working better since hosing thro rad,it was ok ,but really good now,sun i had another trip, done 40 miles 30 c outside, got held up in traffic.after about 10 min the temp started to go up slowly,i turned the ac off, when it got to halfway, the temp went back to normal, when got going put the ac back all ok rest of journey.it seems to me the fan does'nt cool enough when every thing at full chat, the water still all ok,im thinking of changing viscous fan.anyone got any observations on this, water level correct, no probs normal running around
  4. enjoy your car they are great, you will be hooked, welcome to the club
  5. thanks for help,i'd more or less thought it was airlock causing water loss,im going to change thermostat tomorrow and drain flush rad out and refill, there is a label on top of exspansion tank telling you how to fill correctly,so i'll follow that, ive checked the rad not blocked in fins,so i'll do all that, and then have to do pump knowing my luck, but not end of world ,just wanna get it right
  6. hi bren, thanks for that,i done the same trip back, and i turned off air con,and didnt have a prob, gauge stayed at normal,i suppose the water going around heater helped,it had the cambelt changed just before i had it,idont know if pump was changed then, but i had to keep topping up water for a while, nothing much,it just went to just below low, about every 2 wks,the last month its been ok,i suppose it may be pump, the fan has resistance when cold but spins freely when hot,i dont know if thats right,i ham going to clean out rad i think i will change thermostat and refill properly, work thro easy stuff go from there
  7. i had a bit of a shock yesterday,i had to lift the bonnet, cos of a problem with it getting hot, running ok ,on my usual trip from poole to southampton, then got stuck in traffic and the temp started climbing slowly, just as i was going to pull over, the traffic cleared, and on the open road went down to normal, stopped in layby nothing really amiss, got back ok, today iv noticed temp creeping up in traffic then ok again, i know its around 25 here today,i think it may be the viscous fan,its not losing water the antifreeze always been changed regular.but fan will spin relatively freely without any resistance, iknow i have to check usual suspects, press cap, may have to flush out ,give rad hose thro,on my old ls there was an electic fan,but not one on mk4,anyone had probs with fans, have they got resistance normally ?
  8. the cambelt should be changed every 62000miles,so perhaps its been changed early ,it looks good value, you need to go have alook ,check servicing etc, cambelt change, the guy has sold a few ls400 on ebay, would be well worth a look for that money,as for leaves i used to leave mine by trees, the scuttle would get like that a few days after cleaning it out,i dont think its going to be perfect but its not £2/2500 so has to be viewed in that in mind,it certainly would'nt put me off
  9. i like them, makes it look more modern, still if you got the originals as well, you can always swop around for a change, prob best to keep the originals, just in case you ever sell it,as it s proved on here, its personal taste
  10. yes i will stick with the ls v8 at £225 as well, what a bargain
  11. i think he meant he put in 5.5 originally,at first i read it like you, something odd going on,this would'nt happen to two cars,, surely the oil lights should be on at least, really need to ascertain you have oil in engine before using them again
  12. i see true to form,as with all there ideas the 80mph speed limit,on motorways is to be shelved, they seem to annouce these policies, then quietly drop them, this was supposed to help the economy,i dont know about this, but now its not going to happen,i know on the motorway ,theres not too many people at 70 anyway, course the green party and greenpeace, you know the people with pushbikes and sandals, have put their oar in,they reckon it would make an extra 2.2 million tons of carbon emmissions ,how do you calculate that?,as lot of people already speeding i would'nt of thought it would make that much difference, this limit was made back in sixties, for ford anglias and the like.what do you think?
  13. those audi diesel hybrids v10 i think they are will take some beating even in ls prob about 90mph faster down mulsanne straight, like the ls they are almost silent,no v8 noise, you have to leave that to astons ,corvettes vipers etc,the toyota hybrids are a bit slower at mo
  14. no probs i like it here, when threads go off in all directions who would imagine that boots could be connected to amplifiers, although thinking about it they often are
  15. iwas quite surprised how much rubbish i got in the boot today to go to tip it was like a tardus.on the way back i filled up with cider and beer ready for the le mans 24hr, its live on eurosporst the weekend im hopping the toyotas can beat those pesky audis, only the 2nd time in 22 yrs i won't be there,so all you on here cheer on those toyotas i took my old k reg down a few years ago lovely drive down thro france those roads made for ls, never missed a beat, it got quite alot of interest there some people never seen a proper car before
  16. mike don't get me wrong i lile lpg ,it was just observation when i worked there, some of those cars prob driven by 5 different drivers a week, you look after yours so prob that something to do with it but the lights on all the time i dunno .i had a v8 grand chereokee with lpg that had no lights on pity the rest of the car was'nt as good as the engine
  17. i think the em light coming on is something to do with whoever converts it to lpg,i had atemporary job for a while airport runs, alot of the cars there were converted mostly fords and volvo i drove a merc e class diesel, but sometimes i drove the others they all had the em light on,the ist timei got in one i mention this and mechanic said they all do that after conversion, dunno if the result of a cheap conv the fords never lasted long with lpg 40/50,000 without the heads being changed a year in that envireoment, they had some factory lpg volvo s80 which done 500,000 with no real probs, they converted some new ford galaxys they were always off the road when going they all went ok and economic about £25 of gas gatwick and back 250 miles approx they had there own bulk tank so prob cheaper
  18. they are getting rarer, some of the early ones are getting of an where they are a modern classic,in the new members section there's a guy who has just bought a g reg 89, and looks good.a real early one
  19. that is so good for a 89 mk1 almost collectable that one, one of the first,is it a big job to sort out subframe,is it rusty? some parts are a bit of a problem getting new good luck with it
  20. you are quite right about jc & may, they make an entertainment programme about/with cars their audience are for people who are not just car enthusiasts but to encompass a wilder range of viewers, however much we might enjoy a more car type programme it does'nt bring in large amount of viewers, people apparently don't have the attention span these days for something more serious.to be fair we would all act like them if we had the chance, guys together always seem to act their shoe size instead of age
  21. dynamic handling pack other than the wheels im not sure what it consists of ,although it seems akin to the holy grail amongst afficiandos
