V8 Petrol Type

Fellow LC500 V8 owners, I'm curious what petrol you're all putting into your cars. I note the the manual states to use 98 RON fuel, so technically that rules out standard "premium" unleaded and leaves us with BP Ultimate, Shell V-Power and Tesco Momentum 99 (that I am aware of, at least where I am).

I'm coming up to filling my tank for the first time and don't have a local Shell that isn't a pricey services, so that leaves me BP or Tesco. I'm leaning towards Tesco at the moment to be honest. Thoughts?

I have used 97, 98 and 99 octane E5 fuel and all types work exactly the same as far as I can tell. I am getting about 28mpg on these fuels on longer (50 mile) trips, cruising in traffic plus a few blasts to keep me interested.

Thanks for your input chaps, I will go with Tesco as M99 is about 20p a litre cheaper than V-power here!

Whats the ethanol content of each of those, out of interest?  Ethanol has less energy than petrol so if economy is your driving factor is may not be as simple as the price.

I use Shell V power, why?, I don't really know, I just feel like i should, as i do low millage the cost doest really come into it. My only thought is that because i only do short trips it will help keep the ending clean.

On another note, it just passed its MOT, mind you i think they spent more time looking around the car than actually carrying out the MOT

As Malcolm said, both E5, both 99 RON.

Economy not high on my list of priorities to be honest, just couldn’t stomach an extra 20p a litre up front and the BP garages are inconveniently located!

I use Premium 95 RON in mine, never tried the 98 RON.

I think the notice means more in USA as they have the sub-premium unleaded which we don’t get in UK

All very inconsistent. The RC F specifications states you can use 95 RON. The GS F states you should use 98 RON, but you can use 95 if 98 isn't available. The LC states 98 RON or greater (which is around 94 octane using the America rating system).

There's actually a separate section in the manual for the US market - I was quoting the EU market section believe it or not - interesting there seems to be such variation between the RCF, GSF and LC considering they are all 2UR-GSE engine variants.

I think most modern fuel injected petrol cars will adapt to the fuel being used be it 95 or 98. The engine performance is constantly monitored and fuelling adjusted not only based on the type of  fuel being used but driving style and other variations. I remember in the 70s when the company Ford Escort vans were run on 2 star petrol because it was the cheapest, they used to “pink” all the time. Of course there was no such thing as Knock Sensors then just a roughly adjusted carburettor.

My LS400 runs on standard unleaded OK it’s a low compression engine producing an unstressed  250 Bhp from a 4 litre V8.
