Does anyone know if the USB sockets inside the 'ashtray' are permanently live please?

Well, they’re not in mine!  But it’s an older car, so yours may be different.

In mine the ignition has to be ON or it’s in Accessory mode.

I should think that’s a precaution against flattening the Battery.

Thanks for the replies both 👍 I didn't fancy leaving a cable bought from AliExpress permanently plugged in if it was always on

Probably wise!

I’ve had an MP3 Player plugged into one of my USB Sockets for the last five years without any problems.

I leave my AAWireless dongle plugged in all the time and that doesn't cause any problems either. Always goes off with the ignition.

You can always check by plugging your phone into that socket to charge it, and then turn the ignition off....

Knowing that the USB sockets are not live when the motor is off, I have always wondered, as a non-technical person, how mini-fridges plugged in to one the sockets (most appropriately in the boot, if present) continue to keep the contents cool.  As a matter of fact this is what has long prevented me from getting a socket installed in my boot since I don’t want to use one of the armrest pair for this purpose.
