DIY steering wheel alignment a good idea?

Recommended Posts

Although my car had its wheels aligned, and drives straight again after replacing apparently bad allseason tires by good summer tires, the steering wheel is not fully centered. Being a bit OCD i guess but it bugs me out and i want it corrected. I do recall it was like that when i bought it.

I found this video on how to detach to center the steering wheel and it looks straightforward.

Now before i get myself into trouble I'm curious to your thoughts and maybe experiences with doing work like this. I can skate wait until next year's maintenance visit to the dealer.

What do you think?

Check out the video around 9 mins 10 when he announces that it took 5 attempts to align the steering wheel !
Also given the airbag and the delicate clock spring I personally wouldn’t attempt this job.

Don't do it, there are other things that rely on the steering wheel angle. As mentioned above the clock spring can easily be broken if turned too far.

Centering should be done by adjusting the track rod ends. I'm guessing whoever did the alignment only adjusted the one side

I have always seen them use a spirit level to ensure the steering wheel is dead centre before they lock the steering wheel and make adjustments to the alignment. Perhaps the alignment place you used didn't do a good job? Maybe let them know that the steering wheel is not centered and see if they can remedy it. Else consider another centre and get the wheels aligned again but at an average cost of £80ish it isnt cheap. All depends on how bothersome it is.

As above - find a good place that can do a proper alignment - I've had many issues in the past with tyre shops - many just don't have the equipment or skill - need to find a good one - probably by recommendation.

Your responses clearly point to don't do it!  I've had already had a bad alignment experience with a tire fitter which the dealer then corrected.

Because alignment isn't cheap i do tend to let the dealer have another go at it, based on the car tracking well so it's just to get the steering wheel straight.

Our Dutch Lexus forum is not very active but I'll check them also.
