Surely the best idea would be to NOT carry your spare and carry a can of tyre weld... less overall vehicle weight means faster accelleration surely?

True - but tyre weld will knacker your tyre completly (beyond repair) and is only a 50 odd mile solution.... so it's nice to have a choice....

Well I don't do anywhere near 50 miles per day so I'll personally be OK with that... my choice is definately tyre weld.

I've been driving for 8 years now and only ever had to change one tyre myself, and that was just because it was a pain to keep pumping it up because of a slow puncture.

If you don't drive on the hard shoulder or in a field then the chances of actually needing to use your spare tyre / tyre weld are so minimal that the choice is easy for myself.

p.s. Does anyone know if a Lexus IS200 SE will out-perform a BMW 318 uphill..? My mates p*ssed off that I'm getting a Lexus big-style, and is always going on about how good his 318 performs up a specific local 1-mile uphill road.

Well, IMHO, the IS200 should out-perform a 318 up a hill, due to the straight-six offering higher torque than the BMW 4-pot unit...

But, I could be wrong, I'm sure an expert will be able to give you an exact answer..

Well - if you are comfortable with that then great. Personally, I have had 4 "blow outs" in the last 6 years, and would rather have the ability to decide if I want to spend £200 on a new tyre by using tyre weld or swap it for a 17 and get my punctured tyre repaired.

That brings me onto another point - if you rip your tyre, the tyre weld isn't really going to be much use is it?

I do 60 miles a day minimum, and to be honest, if I was that overly concerned about weight, I would be stripping out my6 rear seats (as they are hardly ever used), changing my wheels fro 13" steels and Stripping the engine bare of any non-neccesities...

Each to their own........
