  1. Air filter is OK? Tire pressure OK? After the drive try all wheels for the temperature - if one of the brakes is not stuck. After that, go to toyota and buy the injector cleaner, insert it in the tank + take full tank. Then try to make 20 miles on 3500-4000rpm to clean the DNPR. this is the chapest way to sort it out. Hope it helps.
  2. Ahmed it is correct, just on 220d you have to put in neutral and have the handbrake on.
  3. I think that HIDs on IS are very good - in terms of length and width and also in brightness. Toyota Avensis HIDs had a problem - the inside of the light, where is the mirror coating, was made from plastics and started to corrode - this affected the brightness. I haven't heard about this problem in IS, but if you look closer on avensis light and IS light, the lens and its surrounding looks similar, so may be... I'd recommend to compare it with other IS and than take further action.
  4. I havent heard about problems with breathers, but EGR is a common problem. Search through the forum, you will find step by step manual how to clean it.
  5. I am not technician, but at least inside of EGR looks a bit different than on toyota models. I'd say, the core is the same, but there may be minor changes.
  6. well, we say: if you buy monkey, you should have some cash for bananas...
  7. nope, but I wish :) you can use it for house heating. in general the quality of cars is decreasing, and I doubt that now are used more robust components. I believe in opposite and the reality confirms it. Old cars have no problems even with used oil from mcdonalds... so you think that manufacturers are worried to reccomend biodiesel because of oil companies? :) And they are not worried to constantly work on decreasing the consuption with more efficient engines, aerodynamics, downsizing, start-stop systems, hybrids, energy tires...? I think that car manufacturers do not test their wehicles on biodiesel, furthemore the quality of biodiesel may by varying and the sensitivity on fuel quality of new turbodiesel engines is fact, it is the reality, not just words from somebody. I am not surprised that car manufacturers do not reccomend it. I am surprised that you have bought car for 40 grand and now you want to save every penny with high risk. Even with high quality diesel has IS220d quite lof of problems with reliability, with price tags of new parts: EGR app 350 eur, turbo 2500 eur, DNPR 2000 eur, injector I guess about 400 eur. If you want to drive economically, buy old jetta 1.9d or something similar and you will have no troubles with veg oil...
  8. I forgot to add, that if it really is the gasket, or damaged head, do not drive...the coolant will contaminate the oil and the engine will seize.
  9. in EU every petrol/diesel contains part of bioproduct - according to EU law in diesel max 7%. It damages the rubber parts, clogs the system, rises the consumption...it has no positives.
  10. you go to reverse, mirrors go down and now you can set them as you wish to have and when you go next time to reverse, they will go exactly to that position
  11. the main negative reason is, that growing plants for biodiesel means less growing groceries, which causes the prices to rise and poor people are starwing.
  12. go under the car. whole bottom of the engine bay has a cover, but one part of the cover is detachable (app 15x15cm), secured with 3 screws. Oil filter is there. btw I recommend to buy special oil wrench for demounting, like this one: I do not remember the correct size, only measure the diameter and number of "areas". I bought it from ebay.co.uk for small amount.
  13. I don't remember such an item on the bill, and I am sure they don't do it on 40k service, so I don't think they do it on 20k.
  14. I don't think they do some extra work on it than standard things...
  15. head gasket will damage when car overheats a lot, or when heats up very quickly (eg. instant fast driving with cold engine). Also it could be manufacturers failure. I know about one IS220d with new head and head gasket - changed for free (few kms after 100.000km, thus not in warranty anymore) why they want to change also engine block is for me unknown, perhaps the car was consuming lot of water through broken gasket and the damage is severe also within the block. I hope for you they changed if for free...
  16. if you race, tow heavy loads, or do short drives when the engine doesn't warm up at all, then it makes sense to change it after 6 months, but otherwise I don't think it is worth. Manufacturers recommendation is 30.000km or 2 years, so doing it after 15.000kms/1 year is very reasonable.
  17. you need to remove the housing first, because there is a screw which can not be accessed without having the housing out... There are I think 3 screws holding the housing. Remove also both fuel lines, of course. Now you have to remove the housing - this is tricky, because you have to find the way in the tangle of the suspension. Just play with it, it will take some time, but it is possible. When it will be out, remove the screw and turn the lid. Now, when you will be under the car, on the right side of the fuel tank is the sludge screw - drain the **** out... when you put back the housing with new filter, do NOT start the car instantly!!! just press the start button twice (without the clutch) and in the menu start the program PRIMING. Let it for two minutes (you will hear the fuel pump working) and then you can start...
  18. I change every 15.000kms, which is approximately once in a year. I do always change also the oil filter.
  19. information for people, who do not have warranty anymore - my previous car was citroen c5 with xenon and one ballast got also broken. Service said the same as to bigmick - I'd have to change whole headlight for 1.000 € (pls note that one citroen xenon headlight is more expensive than one bixenon lexus headlight). I went to xenon service and they changed the ballast for 200 € incl. labor. So I hope this will be possible with lexus, too.
