  1. Ive got one.. as far as I can see the only advantage over normal laptops is the size and easier ability to carry it round with you. Thats about it. To be honest its wasted on me as it never leaves the house. Disadvantages are that the keyboard is fiddly, the graphics quality is poor compared to a full screen laptop. No CD / DVD drive....downloading XP isnt as straight forward as you think if you have Linux. Speed wise mine is okay for web browsing..its got a 900 celeron processor, 1 gig of ram although easily upgradable to 2. Battery life is poor, they get hot quite quickly and this can result in a slowdown. Forget playing any games although it will play a few basic ones (appreciate not designed for games). I use my desktop for all office applications as the small screen and keyboard of the netbook arent really ideal and are too fiddly despite me being used to it. The main advantage is that it fits nicely on the arm of the sofa so i can watch the footie and surf the net at the same time, however i can do that with a normal lap top anyway. If you want a cheapo thing for the web or to stick in your work bag / rucksack that doesnt take the room / weight of a normal laptop then its ideal.
  2. admiral.. £190 protected no claims fully comp etc although i might be classed as an old nacker 40+ They all shove the renewal price up but usually drop if you ask them to match a quote from someone else...
  3. How much of that was for the pads and discs The reason I ask is that I just got some rear pads and discs off ebay for £60 inc delivery and was charged £45 to fit them by a small local garage..got my MOT done for £50 at another. This guy (friend of family) was rebuilding a 02 Merc engine and a newish Audi A6 so Im quite he happy can cope with the Lex. Im due a free 60k service by Lexus soon but I know they would try and stiff me for the pads /discs so beat them to it :winky:
  4. Im not talking about your big dealerships here. I had some work done on the Lex today by a trusted family friend who runs a garage on his own. (non MOT's but does the prep etc) This bloke is well connected in the trade and tells me that some MOT garages are struggling big time and are really beginning to start generating extra work by being particulary picky over the test, much more so than usual. (im not saying they all do it ) This sort of thing makes me bloody angry. These places have to apply a national standard and should be trusted and yet if they are not getting customers through the door for service work can easily tweak things to generate MOT work. They are no better than cowboy builders / plumbers etc and its about time trading standards sorted them for once and all. A normal shop cant mug a customer who walks through the door but some of these places still can. A colleague of mines car failed Its MOT as the brake pipe was twisted (not perished). Although an accepted failure the quote of £86 to take off the wheel, remove the caliper and twist it back round was taking the mick...a friend eventually did it for nothing. (Although I hold my hands up to them in the fact they pointed out the pipe wasnt perished!!- perhaps that quote would have totally scared the customer off.) Can anyone think of another profession who can 'generate' work so easily and dishonestly when times get hard? Obviously some are taking a chance as there is no obligation on you getting them to do the work but not everyone has the time to start kiting their motor around different garages before taking it back to the original MOT garage. rant over MOT next week
  5. missus stole keys and worked out how to examine the boot for size B) boots is too small for me and the clan to got to Gatwick/ Florida she reckons(5 of us) Anyone tried fitting a roof box, presume you have to fit a roof rack first anyone else had to suffer this - (not the nagging about me buying a car with a small boot )- but the roof box business
  6. about 320 or if i drive like a fairy in snow mode 340 that petrol price is in Poole, Dorset.. not so far from this place... http://www.pooleview.co.uk/beach/sandbanks.htm ..despite this blot on the landscape B) Poole is actually a pretty down to earth town (hence fuel reasonable i suppose)
  7. Fuel light came on so went straight to local Tesco and filled to the brim ..£48..should last me a month Now thats more like it :winky: Makes me feel better about running the thing
  8. thanks for that, i thought it was, that junction was invisible untill i hit the car, but its one of those things, ive took it on the chin learnt my lesson now, other members opinions still welcome Possibly one big factor you missed here and would have prevented you overtaking at that point. You state the junction was invisible however the road markings should have changed on the approach to the junction even if you cant see the junction. The point of the markings changing is to indicate a hazard or junction ahead. Alot of people arent aware of the reason for different road markings so worth noting for future reference http://www.ukmotorists.com/marking_signs.asp scroll down that page and you will see what i mean
  9. BEWARE; RESPONSIBLE POST perverting the course of justice can mean a spell inside..is it worth it Its a ticket ffs..just pay it and you wont have any sleepless nights and you wont risk dropping any of your family in it either
  10. no disrepect but can i ask why your dad decided to take such a hit on changing his car... No wonder the OP was offered pittance when seemingly there are people ready to give away mint, low mileage motors.
  11. 58% down on last year Ford 18562 - down 11% Vaux 12151 Mini 1723 Mitsubishi 362 Alfa 251 BMW ? 100,333 new vehicles registered last month....378 Lexi
  12. im watching this thread with interest.. im a fellow knock sufferer
  13. we dont do snow here but do a nice Lapland experience instead :winky: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/article1997694.ece By last night trading standards had received more than 1,300 complaints.
  14. Ive been using the snow mode for last week or so....although clearly less power the car does seem smoother in everyday driving . ( mainly town driving) Has anyone got any figures re MPG saving in snow mode
  15. re service history cut and paste from above Vehicles with an incomplete or non Lexus Centre service history can only qualify as an Approved Pre-Owned Lexus once the retailing Lexus Centre completes the most recent major service. Read into that what you want: missing services ? just stamp it up with the latest and bobs your uncle. Half the problem is that people walk into a Lexus dealership and let their guard down...and just presume that everything will be rosy and above board As for the no quibble exchange.....thats a con that falls into their hands...how can they lose? If you part ex a car dont expect to get it back if its worth anything and watch as they amazingly cannot come up with an exchange that doesnt involve you parting with more cash than you did for your orginal purchase. My advice is to examine every bit of paperwork on that vehicle before you do a deal. good tip....sift through the paperwork before you buy and you will may well come across previous owners tel number....ring them before you buy if you can Fictional or not, i dont think the odd thread like this does any harm in making people sit up and do their homework on their prospective purchase......
  16. just remember a 'Lexus approved service history' doesnt mean a full service history....i kid you not..read it in the small print..that may be why you dont have a service book... I dont think your experience is that uncommon.... B)
  17. Really appreciate your view. PLEASE don't take my following comments as a go back, I do hear what you are saying these are my thoughts. Went to PC "shop" tonight the tiny Acer looked really good and the Linux system seemed ok too, though the staff said I'd struggle setting parental controls, external drives etc. The only eeepc in stock was £60 dearer, sorry but I am not spending nearly £250 plus all the other trimmings on a laptop for my kid that I know will moan its be out of date in 12 months. I have a spare screen I would put in her room, as I realise the built in screen is small. Part of the reason I was looking at small lap tops was that: 1) they look cool 2) We have 2 other "proper laptop" and portable dvd for watching movies. 3) every other weekend she see her "real" dad (long story best told over a few beers, but I have raised her for the last 10 years, and she is 10) and I want her to keep up with school work. 4) try and stop fights over the family PC and let her chat to frineds on MSN. I think I might still get one but one that runs in windows that I kind of understand better and can better link an external drive to. no problemo i know where you are coming from. It does look 'cool' and the chances are she will love it. Linux is great for browsing the net, its so quick....but i struggle to even download basic programmes on it..just cant get to grips with Linux...you can download xp if you have a spare key however so may work out cheaper to do it that way this is good forum http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewforum.php?id=48
  18. hope it fixes it...do you mind reporting back after the work has been done to see if its sorted....im intrigued as to why the other mechanics failed to spot such an obvious problem....and Lexus were quick to hit you with a £450 + quote... also the mechanic who's doing the work..has he had a look and does he agree? the reason i mention this is that Lexus did an awful lot of work on my car trying to solve a suspension noise and it achieved the square route of zero...luckily i didnt have to pay. I really do hope it sorts your problem and I admire the way you snaffled the biccies /coffee got the quote and bid them farewell
  19. DONT DO IT....... GET HER A PROPER LAP TOP !!!...... sorry for shouting.... Ive got a 10 year old daughter and also an eeepc 901. My daughter has a full size lap top and when I got the 901 she wanted one like kids do...however the real purpose of the 901 is the fact that its small and portable, you said your daughters would be plugged in.. Firstly you will be limited on the game front due to the awful graphics, there is also no disc drive so they cant pop in a dvd or whatever without you bolting an external one on, the keyboard is so fiddly the kids really do struggle with the layoutl, its jusy not kid friendly. The sound is poor the screen quality leaves alot to be desired although that may not bother her. A full size, Vista enabled lap top that can play dvds / cds, simpson games etc is much better for kids...and cheap as chips from ebuyer,my daughter doesnt bother with the 901 because its so limited... trust me on this one
  20. 6k trade is getting there....mines a 53 plate O4 reg and was offered from 4.5 to 5.5k part ex recently...private you have to be looking at 7k
  21. no snow here in deepest Dorset.....its mild and raining..it rarely snows here....had the Lex for 18 months and never seen snow on it as a matter of fact the only slightly interesting thing that has been on my Lex is my neighbours pussy.... the tabby one :D
  22. sorry cant really see it...dyslexia suffers may see it differently however but seeing as i didnt turn up at a toga party dressed as a goat i guess that doesnt apply to me. as for the TIMMY one ..yeah can just about see that .... :winky: TIMMY ? hope you are joking TIM is a popular name 'down sarf'....whats the problem (ps- yes i was joking )
  23. rattles are a nightmare....you know the only way they can attempt to fix them is to take things apart. When that happens you know your car is never going to be the same again..pulling out a whole dash in a new vehicle may cure the problem but you are left with that feeling that your pride and joy has been in bits and it does something to you... Theres also the feeling that these things were put together on multi million pound purpose built production lines yet some apprentice may be unscrewing your virginal dash/ panels whatever and later creating more grief down the line. This is a real Issue that Lexus need to look at and the only way for them to take notice is for people to make representations, however I know how sole destroying it is to keep returning your car. My recent vehicles include a new Mazda6 and a 6 month old vectra...neither rattled..my 5 year old IS200 doesnt rattle and at work i drive a cheapo chevrolet lacceti (tog gear -star in a reasonably priced car) and that doesnt rattle. I also drive a fiat van and that does rattle ...
  24. sorry cant really see it...dyslexia suffers may see it differently however but seeing as i didnt turn up at a toga party dressed as a goat i guess that doesnt apply to me. as for the TIMMY one ..yeah can just about see that .... :winky:
