Tears in perforated leather

Hi All,

Just picked up my new RC 300h F-Sport from the dealers yesterday and noticed last night when I got home that there was small tears in the perforated section of the driver seat.

This car has just over 50  miles on the clock and yes I did check to make sure my jeans didn't have any metal rivets or logos on them.

My old IS250 had similar perforated seats and was over 8 years old when and I never seen this, just wondering if this is a common occurrence?

Yes I have made the dealer aware, and I am not a large chap either weighing in at over 11 stone.

Never a problem in either of my RC300h cars.

A  car with 50 miles on the clock? An ex-demo car? Could have had dozens of bums in that seat.

Either way somebody has sat in that seat with perhaps a pen in their back pocket, service tech? Or someone has lent on the seat holding a something pointy. We can guess all day!

The leather in these cars are lovely and soft but also hard wearing. A repair is possible but would always be visible, especially as you know it's there. I'd push for a replacement cover.

yes that's what I was thinking too, it went to have a Supaguard treatment and also dash cams fitted front and rear between my test drive and picking the car up.

I didn't even think to look at the seats when getting the car as I had never seen this on my old IS, I will see what the dealer says, I will also look at the back and passenger seats too.

It is my 4 Lexus from them (2 second hand and 2 new) I was pretty annoyed when I seen it last night, I thought it was just a mark or bit of thread until closer investigation.

I think that Nemesis is probably right and that a repair would be an inadequate response from the currently unnamed Lexus Dealership.

Will do, I think the chap I dealt with has a day off today, so hopefully will hear back tomorrow.

I checked the rest of the interior and it looks fine, it is just this one part. 

It isn't the end of the world and I know there is a lot more important things going on in the world but it is a bit disappointing.

Barry:  To judge by your photo no fragments of leather appear to be missing within the damaged area, so it is possible that a skilled leatherworker, perhaps an upholsterer, could carry out a virtually invisible repair.  But I certainly wouldn’t count on anybody in a car workshop having the necessary skill.  Regardless of any solution you and your dealer work out, I would suggest you ask for at least a free service to compensate you for the irritation.

Weird thing is it is not at the rear of the horizontal part of the seat unit, it is almost in the middle of the cushion on the side closes to the central tunnel!

If I don't hear back from Lexus today, I think my chap was out yesterday, I will be pursuing.

My concern is it may get worse and expand, at present it is a minor eye sore if you know what your looking for.

Hi All,

The chap I was dealing with was out for a couple of days last week, but I spoke to him on Friday, he apologised and did mention as the car was in the show room it may have had quite a few different people sit in it.

He is contacting a car interior specialist they use with a view to having the problem area repaired.

Will keep updated on how it goes!

The upholsterer took a look at the pictures I provided and thinks it won't be a difficult job (famous last words lol) and hopefully maybe available next week.

Once the repair is done / not don will post pictures!

Hi Wingy,

Still waiting to take the car to the upholsterer! It is a small business so just waiting for a slot to become available.

This has not been the smoothest transition in to a new Lexus as I had issues with the part ex money too, though it was corrected quickly once I highlighted it.

As soon as the work is done I will post 🙂

@Wingy Quick update, chased the salesman again today for an update on this, probably won't see any traction on this until after Christmas when (if) the Covid restrictions are relaxed!

After seeing this I looked through my jeans and removed the metal on the rear of them.

Stupid companies that put metal ads on rear pockets and stupid me that has not noticed before.

Such things can do a lot of damage to leather seats. Luckily nothing happened to our seats.

We have black leather, so no worry here.

Bought a pair of shorts in the summer with zippers on the cargo  and back pockets for extra security. Realised after that I can't wear them in the car. So ones with velcro fastenings purchased.

@olliesgrandadmy IS250 had cream leather seats and my ex wore dark jean all the time, it stood up well iirc!

Update on my seats, received a call from the dealer to let me know they hadn’t forgotten and as soon as things relax a bit they will get the car booked in with the upholsterer, and even offered to come pick up and return the car!

Hi All,

Update on the seat, it is now repaired and even though it was a small area the dude did, IMO an amazing job!

The area in the red box out is the repaired area in the first picture.

Not only that but due to the whole Covid  situation and my patience the chap I was dealing with at Lexus Edinburgh arranged me to have an LC500H as my courtesy car for a few days while the repair was being done!!

I have also attached the pictured of that BEAST!

Oh this takes me back. Many years ago I was made responsible for removing all the IT kit from a company office which was closing. Instead of doing the sensible thing and making them hire a van for me to use, I just said I'd stick everything in the car. I spent the day getting everything ready and when 2pm came round and everyone was kicked out to redundancy or other jobs, I began to strip the server rack down. After undoing all the screws in the rack, I put the screwdriver in my back pocket (can anyone see where this is going yet?)

An hour or so passed. I filled the boot with servers, switches, SANs, a Riverbed and assorted IT kit. I locked up, then got in the car. Remember unlucky Alf from the Fast Show? I used his catchphrase when I remembered the screwdriver in my back pocket and leapt out to see the puncture mark in my perforated seat. I was not a happy chappy.
