Full power is intermittent....

Recommended Posts

I sometimes plant my foot and don't get the full power I know is there.... The engine seems not to kick in.... Only after several attempts it decides to give me full power....

Why??

I am in sport mode, and HV mode, so surely when I plant my foot to the floor i should get full acceleration.

So annoying.......

Try it when not in HV(sic) mode?

I would expect the ICE to always power up and get into the maximum power band quickly but you may not always get full system power if the batteries are low or the hybrid inverter is hot so full electrical assistance cannot be provided.

Another question, if driven mostly on ev and occasionally you need full acceleration and the ICE kicks in, would that be bad for the engine to come in suddenly at full revs from completely cold?

I wouldn't think so.

The worst thing for the engine is that the oil takes time to get everywhere, but the Lexus system uses MG1 to spin the engine at 1,000rpm (thereby allowing the oil to circulate properly) before applying fuel and a spark to fire it.

I'm still running my car in so no rapid acceleration for me yet but experience so far is that the system is brilliantly engineered, the change from EV to engine to EV is seamless and actually happens a lot more often than I expected in Auto mode when I look at the 'Last Trip' info in the App.

I've seen the same, eg. joining a motorway doing 50-60 in sport mode, put my foot flat to the floor and literally nothing happens. At lower speeds it accelerates as you would expect.

Thanks, didn't know that, very clever! Oil circulation was my concern.

Definitely worth contacting your dealer and insist they speak to Lexus so they are aware. Sounds like new firmware is needed.
