Tyres

Hi All,

I have an lc500 v8 and have to purchase new tyres.

Presently I have : on the front, Bridgestone Potenza’s. 245/40 RF21 96Y and rear also Bridgestone’s Potenza 275/35/RF21 99Y.

Any advice on the best tyres to fit now , as price is also a factor for me.

I've used "Blackcircles" a number of times and with no complaint. The following is for the back wheels, and obviously the fronts will be ever so slightly cheaper.

Fitted prices seem to be circa £325 each for run flats and £250 to £300 for conventional, albeit there are some at £125 ish. Not sure I would go with those but presumably if Blackcircel are selling them they may well be more highly regarded than their price might imply. Your call.

OEM are the Bridgestones but I’ve seen Michelin too - they must be runflats too. I’ve used Camskill before, also Openeo and even Asda Tyres (!).

The one thing that concerns me with the LC is the chrome wheels - a clumsy fitter damaging them would outweigh any savings so when I need tyres I may well go via Lexus.

I think you'll find Lexus are prepared to price match so get your prices from whomever and use that to arrange supply/fitment.

Same choice as me and or Goodyear. Last choice would positively be Bridgestone, and guess what mine came with.....!

That’s exactly what I found when buying my last set of Goodyears.

I’d called to arrange a Service and casually asked if they’d like to quote for a set of tyres at the same time.  They did and - somewhat to my surprise - matched the price my regular local tyre specialist had offered.

As it happens, I didn’t take up the offer - but only because my local tyre shop were also Agents for Alloygators and they would fit a set at the same time.  But were I getting new tyres and having a Service, I would have gone with Lexus.

Were I Lexus CFO, I’d be a bit annoyed if they didn’t!  😡

 Mind you, I would have thought that Yokohamas would have been the more natural choice.  I’ve never bought a new Lexus, so I wonder if it’s at all possible to specify the brand/type of tyre - within a limited selection, no doubt.

The CT came with Pirelly P7.  Continental tyres are not that much more expensive and if bought by a big company like Toyota I suppose they could easily compete with the tyre garages.

I'd suggest that you check carefully what Lexus dealers offer you. I was once quoted a good price when I asked for the same or similar tyres to be fitted. Before going ahead, I checked the details, and they had offered to fit tyres with lower speed and load rating. Those may well have invalidated my insurance and would have made an interesting liability situation if one had let go on the autobahn.

If you want runflats, there’s little choice.

I replaced my Michelins with Bridgestones. Night and day difference. The Bridgestones really struggle with traction 😢

I tend to use them unless there is a reason not to. All manufacturers can produce something that doesn't quite hit the mark so I look for proper reviews and take into account the compromises I want from a tyre. Tyre Reviews do some excellent tests and comparisons.

Hmmm, I'm not overly surprised by the final test results, and particularly that the Bridgestone was way down the ranking.

There is probably some merit in getting the tyres fitted at the dealership in terms of comeback if they damage a rim...?

The tools (machines) they have now are close to fool-proofed. Rim damage when changing tyres are or at least should be a thing of the past.

The specialists are just that. Lexus and Toyota are changing a tyre now and then. The specialists do nothing else all day.

If rim protection is a real concern, I would recommend fitting a set of Alloygators.

They.come in a variety of colours, so can either match the tyre or provide an interesting contrast.

But mainly should you ever put a slight scuff on one - which can be  rubbed out anyway - just think of the expensive alloy repair you’ve been saved!  😊

You could also fit wider tyres to offer some extra protection from kerbing and potholes.

This says you can put 265s on the front and 295s on the rear.  I think the sidewall might also be a thicker so ride might also get improved on the older  “boneshaker” cars.

Took the car out for a run today. Dry but cold. The Bridgestone’s are pants. Absolute pants. Can’t put anything down in terms of power. I may change them out of frustration as opposed to wear…next service is next month. Is Michelin the consensus?

Never had an issue with Michelins on any performance car I have had, and they seem to be the go to choice for 95% of people. 

Have also found Continentals Sport Contact very good as well though, especially as a 'year-round' tyre.

I had ps4s on my Tesla model 3 performance. Even in the worst conditions losing traction was a very very rare event. Granted it was 4wd but even so. I think I’ll swap them out as we are going for a few spirited drives in the next couple of months.

Agree the Bridgestones are rubbish. I’ve got PS5 on my Stinger and they’re way better than the Conti sport contact 6 that were on there. Age and tread depth may have an effect but I’m convinced they’re better, certainly in the wet.

Totally agree - but for me, I've actually learnt to enjoy them because of this.

Having said that, I'll definitely be going back to Michelin. They seem much more predictable.
