Bonnet Struts Failure

Featured Replies

I had my vehicle serviced three weeks ago (Main dealer), and just went to check the Oil, water etc before going on a long journey.

The bonnet released and lifted okay, but immediately dropped down! I just caught it with my elbow.

BOTH struts seem to have failed at the same time, as there is little if any resistance from either side.

Any thoughts on how this could have happened? And has anyone else had one fail yet? (MY2022)

One of the struts seems to have had grease applied at its base, but I have no idea if this from new or applied later.

Current solution is not ideal

You would think that these would last for years.

I would contact your dealer tomorrow if possible. Hopefully they will replace them (FOC).

Good luck 😀

Very curious, that both failed. Maybe one had gone earlier and the other finally gave up?

Back to your dealer and see if the Relax warranty covers replacement. Bonnet release cable is mentioned but not the support struts (tailgate struts are mentioned). Got to be worth a call?

…… and remember if they aren’t warranty covered then it’s possible you could get them re-gassed ( if that’s possible ) at. SGS …….

Might be a lot less expensive than having Lexus fix them or even buying replacements from wherever 🤔

Good luck

Malc

Replacements shouldn't be too expensive and should be easy to fit (I think 😀).

But hopefully Lexus will replace them.

I replaced mine on the ls430 (but they had lasted 23 years, so no complaints). I think I got some off SGS and it was really straightforward to fit. Just make sure you watch/listen/read the correct vids/articles first and support the bonnet properly. Mine was a great big heavy thing.

Replacements are £175 each! Will soon find out if warranty covers them..it better. Bottom line is they should not be failing at 4years old /24k miles.

Had door locks freeze in winter (replaced under warranty), B pillar rattle ongoing, fuel filler cap fail and not covered by warranty, now bonnet stays fail.....not a great Lexus experience tbh.

Had a Rav4 for 14 years / 120k miles and not a single fault...modern cars are getting too complicated!

Worst case non OEM replacements on eBay will be considerably less. As @Malc1 https://www.sgs-engineering.com/ may be able to regas yours.

As @NemesisUK pointed out, one was already gone, the second has failed now.

Try Autodoc. I bought 2 Bonnet Struts for my GS300 from Autodoc in December 2021 for £19.72 for the pair including shipping.

Car back from main dealer today, and new struts fitted FOC.

Also had fuel filler cap repaired (new spring fitted) FOC.

Lexus Customer relations saved me on this occasion 👍.
