Petrol and diesel are almost the same price now ...low of 104 c ( 72p) to 127c (87p) , don't forget this is low octane sh!t as well 95 ron, you can find better ron at some select stations but £££££.......aint that rich!

Worst part of our road tax is the state of the secondary roads, i forget the facts but most of the Road tax taken in dosen't actually get spent of the roads.....and we have VRT too....Take a new 2lt car and add 30% to the price to "register it"....

I think the French have the best system.

A fixed price road tax (Less then €100 I think) but there is a higher tax on their petrol. So you are paying by use.

Only fair way. Why should the littel old lady who does 5,000 miles a year pay the same as the salesman who does 30,000 miles.

Only probelm though is when you travel from our type of system to the French system you are paying twice.

Europe should probably adopt a union wide system.

And of course our government will only increase the Petrol proces up EVEN higher...relatively speaking...

When will the diesel cars start running on Rapeseed oils? Mercedes apparently patented the technology in the 1980's...so no one else can develop it...

That's progress for you!

Though some have found a loop hole and are doing their own version now...

In Ireland there is a company that will convert your diesel engine to run on rapeseed. Costs arount €1,500 for the work and you can then burn full rapeseed or any mix of rapeseed and diesel.

You then need some sort of storage at your home. The minimum delivery is 1t and it works out around 65c/L.

No need for any protection / bunding around the storage either apparently. If there is a spill they say let your dog at it and watch it's coat shine afterwards.

Only works out as cost efficient if you are doing around 30,000 miles a year because of the initial costs for payback.

Also voids your warantee by the way. So they don't advise anyone to do it during that time.
