Which warning light has come on? Did anything untoward happen prior to the light coming on?

Like Dave, which light came on?

Regarding the fault code readers on ebay: They are no good for the mk1 GS, it isn't ODBCII. Fault codes can be read by shorting a couple of pins in diagnostic socket and counting the flashes of the "check engine" light.

hi

its the exclamation icon near the oil and ECT/PWR light.

i had a puncture repaired a week before it started. usually if a light bulb burns it appears, so thats why i checked all my lights, but unfortunately its not a light bulb.

rick, can i self diagnose the car?

It's either the brake fluid level or a brake light bulb......can't remember which. Did you check the centre brake light?
