Alloy Wheel Corrosion

Recommended Posts

I know this has been discussed many times, but are the corrosion issues on Lexus wheels really that bad?

Also do refurbished wheels tend to corrode easily again?

Answer to the first question is yes, and to the second it will depend on who and how the refurb is done. If it's the standard Lexus refurbishment then the answer is the same as to the first.

My original wheels were refurbed by the previous owner, and I'm hoping they had a real good job done, so I don't have to have it redone. The scabby set I've put on for winter are bubbling, peeling and flaking pretty badly

The best way is just to clean them regularly and put a layer of protective sealant on, this prevents any corrosion.

I hate to disagree with people but that's not gonna prevent corrosion. It may slow it down but won't prevent it.

Mine are cleaned 3-4 times a week and I spray the protective stuff on. My wheels are still getting worse. Slowly admittedly but still deteriorating! :(

I hope that this isn't a silly question but, are alloy wheels really alloy wheels or are they in fact steel wheels with an alloy coating?

Sorry to appear daft but I must admit to not knowing the answer to that one.

Here you go. Good old wiki! Lol... :)

This may be true BUT the set on our 2007 IS still looks good 3 years since they were replaced ( when we bought the car) They get washed religiously (with car soap and water) every weekend and gets a coat of Poor boys wheel sealant once a month. The wheels on our 2011 model get the same treatment and they still look brand new (other than the odd tone chip :megaangry:)
