Thinking About Buying A 460

Recommended Posts

Right the little history, when I was 19 I got a IS200 and loved that. Moved away from Lexus for a bit then at 23 got a LS400. Had that 6 months and thinking off upgrading to 460, insurance is okay even with been 23

So what do I need to know etc.

How much is insurance for a young fellow such as yourself? Mike

The '400 is £528 a year and looking around £900 a year for a '460

So not the end off the world

Thats amazing. I think that will upset a few of the mature members on here. Mike

I am not upset by the price that ipwn is paying My Ls400 costs me £219 fully comp protected ncb and I would call myself as mature as a stilton.

Dont like Stilton, my wife loves the stuff.

As a mature person I am paying £196 so I am not upset, but I do remember before Christmas there was a thread about some terrible figures some of the members were being charged. Mike

mine is about £294, Iv just changed it ,protected ncb,max ncb, car if in accident etc, when i went to change it over from last car my existing company were insisting that this sort of car had to have a tracker fitted b4 they would insure it which is alright if it was new

but on a car worth 2k at most i found a bit much so i found other insurance, i am 64 so insurance not that much of a problem,i had quite a lot cheaper quotes, than this some were high excesses

a 460 would be nice but £15000 more than my car on average mk4 ls400 id have to wait another 8 yrs to be in my price range, our leader mr camshaft does'nt make it easy to own one of those when retired these low interest rates are the killer, thou to be quite honest i cant see a 460 could give me that much more pleasure than mine really

Hi Adam,

To answer your initial question, there isn't much to watch out for. Obviously, you'll avoid dodgy motors.

My main advice to you would be to make sure its an SE-L you get. The toys and the safety stuff do make a difference, and will certainly make it easier to resell when the time comes.. Make sure you get all the keys, including the keycard. The keycard is standard issue for an SE-L, and I believe that Lexus charges about £600 for a replacement.

If you've got a SE-L the only other possible option is the heated steering wheel. I prefer this, as it has some texture, and to be honest, on a cold morning it's the first part of the car that warms up, and is therefore very welcome!

Enjoy!

I am with elephant who are apart off the admiral group. They specialise in younger drivers and never had a problem with me owning big engine cars like my Lexus's and had a Range Rover 4.6v8 when I was 22

There is a couple off 460's in stock at Lexus Ipswich. Going to see of they will let me test drive them with my age

I think the main differences are the extra toys and obviously more modern in the looks department but set against that are that the ride quality is inferior as well as noise levels. Had you never experienced a 400 inferior ride quality and noise levels would not be in the equation.

I think those of us with Mk1,2,3 & 4 400 owners have been spoilt. Mike

Mine is £250 with protected bonus and agreed value but then I am 58, IAM member and Cardington A. Would have less if I could garage her but she won't fit. To be fair, she will fit but then I would have to exit via the sunroof which is a touch undignified.

With a LS 400 costing me less than £1500 to put on the road including 6 months tax and 12 months insurance, I cannot see that an LS460 would add much to my driving pleasure, apart from increasing the odds of my breaking a speed limit here or there.

Hi Adam,

They will let you test drive their cars - they've always been very good at that sort of thing. However, I think you'll find that Lexus Ipswich just don't have two 460s on their site.

Have a look at the national Lexus site, at all of their 460s. They have about six of the new demonstrators at about £70k, a repo at about the same price, and six further 460s spread around the country. Lexus Ipswich is listing those two cars probably because they are owned within a dealership group. They just aren't physically there. But talk to them, and they should be able to get you at least one to look at and drive.

Personally, I'd go to where the car was for sale. That makes it easier for you to say "no, I don't want this one, I want another", and start to walk away!

: o )

Im 30 and got a IS250 was my dads and still got IS200 always like these 'big' or saloon cars all my mates never understood or keen, they got hatchbacks there about same age as me being 3 /4 of them are older than me few years !! I love a LS or GS maybe Infiniti next car ! As for fleet insurance isn't that like trader insurance if you're in a company/business giving you access to drive cars ??

Ive always paid a steady £400 ish for my cars since 19 starting with a 2,0L Turbo diesel. As ive got older ive bought newer and better cars so it has staying around the same. I would never be able to afford a LS insurance im guessing but have never done a quote all the same. I mean i guess i could afford it physically but im not wasting thousands of pounds a year on insurance, £400 is bad enough. Im 25 btw

Seems hard to believe that you could afford such powerful cars at a young age only because every other young person on the road has to resort to KA's, Fiesta's and Clio's etc, which im not complaining about! alot of the youngsters on the road would be suicidal with anything more!

I'm also interested in what is being meant by the term 'fleet insurance'

It seems to have gone very quiet on this subject. My son who is now 27 has full NCB and is still paying around £750 pa for a 1.8 Focus. Mike
