Steering Wheel Problem

looking to buy an immaculate 2002 ls 430

however the steering wheel doesn't adjust up or down

the motor makes a faint noise when the toggle is first moved

I assume that it will be the motor that is at fault!

any advice on what it will cost to fix so that I can barter with the dealer

I've heard it's very expensive on the ls430, don't know how much though

Info I have, The motors for telscopic and tilt are renewable and cost £350 each.

i believe there 2 - wish they were the same as the seat motors as i have a spare seat lying around in bits

Have a look through eBay as there are always LS's being broken up (I know I'm sorry about those dreadful words but there are many people out there without any soul)

also the tilt motor is easy enough to replace - the telscopic is alot involved and required alot of dismantling - there is lots of info in the .com forums but no full write up as to hoe to tackle the problem

The motors on the ls430 are not the same as the 400 they do not fit. There are two motors required and they are slightly different and are not interchangable.

As Mark says the tilt is reasonably easy ,the telescopic I think the steering wheel as to come off and the yolk removed from the car.I think your post refers to the tilt so it should be ok to do in situ.I think I read on an american site that unlike the 400 it is not possible to get into the worm drive to service these motors so don't let the seller fob you off with that one.
