  1. That sounds rather interesting. Care to share any more details about these engine projects?
  2. A bit dramatic, don't you think? These car are not an absolute nightmare, and the problems they suffer are mostly the same as all modern diesel cars. A vast majority of issues that are posted on here are either EGR or DPF related. If you browse other car forum (like I do), then you will see that this is hardly isolated to only Lexus cars. I have now covered almost 20k miles in mine in less than 2 years, and I have not suffered either of these problems because (a) I clean my EGR regulary, and (b) I drive my car as it should be, namely blasting up and down a motorway. I bet you a lot of the owners on here with problems are just driving around town without ever giving the car a workout. Are there IS220'd out there with more problems than just the ones mentioned? Yes, of course, but that could happen to any car. But, remove the EGR and DPF issues, and I don't think it is a very unreliable car, and certainly not an embarrassment to anyone.
  3. Thanks Stephen. Although you say 'we', which does arouse my curiousity as to how you know all this.
  4. That is very interesting, thanks Stephen. So, by that reckoning, the engine was built sometime in March 2012. I wonder how long before it was fitted to my car. I am assuming it was replaced due to head gasket failure, although I have no paperwork to support this theory. I am popping into the dealer on Friday, so I suppose I could ask them if there is any record.
  5. It is rather baffling. I am curious to know what they say, so please keep up updated.
  6. Hey Paul, I tend to clean it once every 10k or so. It is pretty clogged by then, so a good amount of carbon is scrapped off. Yep, already only undo the top bolt from the head and swing the pipe out of the way rather than removing it. Makes life much easier. Although, annoyingly, I managed to drop one of the nuts from the top of the EGR valve this time and couldn't find it. I have now replaced the flange bolts with new ones, although they are now 13mm instead of 12mm. I admit I have never noticed which way round the gaskets go. I just make sure they are intact and put back properly when I do it. One thing that I did this time that I haven't done before was separate the motor from the valve. I then pressed the valve out with my finger and cleaned the edge, along with the seat. Not sure how much difference it makes, but it wasn't hard to undo the 3 allen bolts to do it. The only thing that annoys me about doing the job is that I can't get inside the inlet manifold to clean it. The little I can see looks flithy and gunked up, so I am sure I am losing some efficiency because the manifold is dirty, but there is no easy way to clean it. I was tempted to try a tube cleaning brush, but I am worried about it breaking or losing bristles while down there.
  7. Yep, I have had the car since 2015. That is what I am wondering also; does this sticker mean the engine was replaced in 2012? Do other IS's have similar stickers in the same place?
  8. Hey Chaps, I was looking under the bonnet of my car the other day while cleaning the EGR valve and noticed a sticker on the rocker cover, at the front. So I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on what it means? The most obvious thing that stands out is the 03/12 below the bar code. Thanks.
  9. So the engine management lights are on and it says 'Check VSC', but the car still has no fault codes? I didn't think that was possible?
  10. Congrats. Always a nice milestone to cover with a car. I missed mine by 9k miles, but I have managed it on other cars. Now, how long before we see a picture of 200k miles?
  11. That is a fine looking car you got there. Even more impressive when you consider that it is 11 years old. I must be in the minority because I actually like those wheels. I have nothing against the 18's, and if I am sure I would be happy if they were fitted to mine, but the standard 17's look good in my opinion. I had mine refurbed a few months ago, and like Bob, I managed to curb one rather badly the other day. Damn annoying as it took a good chunk out of the wheel.
  12. Perhaps mine is a little on the low side. I actually plan to give my EGR valve a clean on Friday. However, I will say that the car loses mpg pretty quickly over 70mph. At ~65mph, I get 40-45mpg. Also, I rarely get a clear run on the M4 or M25 during my trips, so there is some slowing down and speeding up involved.
  13. Welcome Nick Can you describe the shaking? Is the whole car shaking or the steering wheel? I had a bad vibration around 70mph a while back that turned out to be a slightly buckled rear wheel. A re-balance sorted it out.
  14. Recommending a diesel?!? Go wash your mouth out On a more serious note, I doubt an 220d will achieve 55mpg, regardless of how fast. At 80mph, I average around 35mpg. With more careful driving, I can manage around 40mpg per tank. I agree they are great for driving on the motorway with the strong mid range torque. I will also echo what others have said about the commute. It has to be a very good opportunity to warrant such a move. One day a week I have to do a 120 mile round trip to London, and when I think about possibly doing that every day, I shudder. I think it would eventually drive me mad.
  15. You parked in Luton?!? That explains it then. Nah, but seriously, that sucks Linas. Hopefully it won't cost too much to repair. It does look like a small caliber bullet hole. Probably an air rifle, as mentioned. If that is the case, surely it can't be that hard for the police to have a look in the two houses you have shown?
  16. This document is a TSB for American cars that relates to the dash rattle and how they solved it: L-SB-0044-08.pdf
  17. Assuming that the window works properly otherwise, that is another unusual problem you have experienced. If you open it manually, do they all close when you hold the lock button?
  18. @rayaans I would just like to inform you that I think the colour of your cars looks like refrigerator paint! @Wallace Lovely looking car you got there. I think I would pick Azure Blue were I to buy one. Do you have any pics of the interior?
  19. Well, that is strange. I have the ELM327 Bluetooth scanner and it works fine in my car. The other one I linked was recommended from someone on here, so it should also work.
  20. Hi Martin, Good to hear of a 220d owner who loves his car. 175k is quite a bit of usage, so it nice to hear that the car is still going well. Towing a trailer also sounds like it has worked hard. Sorry to hear about your troubles, it does sound like a pain. The only thing I can suggest is getting your own OBD2 reader to find and clear any faults. Something like this should do the trick: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U581-Car-Engine-Fault-Diagnostic-Scanner-CAN-OBD2-EOBD-Code-Reader-Scan-Tool-UK-/231514532804?_trksid=p2349526.m2548.l4275 Alternatively, with an app on your phone, you could use something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Mini-OBD2-ELM327-V2-1-Bluetooth-Car-Scanner-Android-Torque-Auto-Scan-Tool-/162312931706?hash=item25ca9ac97a:g:BmoAAOSw2gxYpXEH Hopefully it was just complaining about the lack of ABS, so once you clear the code, everything should be back to normal.
  21. Well, I can't comment specifically on the GS, but on the IS it is in the glovebox. Interestingly, my car on the portal also says it has the ipod integration kit under accessories, but I am pretty such there is nothing in my glovebox. Even more surprisingly, it claims my car should have 18" wheels fitted whereas it has the standard 17". Perhaps the portal has a few glitches?
  22. Well, the usual suspects in this case would be a vacuum leak or a pully/belt. Have you stuck your head under the bonnet while someone revs it? If you can figure out where the noise is coming from, it would help matters greatly.
  23. This is why I am asking here. If others hear the same from their dealers, it would indicate there is something to this. If not, then it is, like you say, a sales tactic.
  24. I hope you're right. Although, now I think about it, he didn't try and sell me a warranty even though mine is up in July.
  25. Hello all, While my car was at the dealer last week, I overheard some of the service guys tell another customer that Lexus is possibly ending its 2 years for the price of 1 offer on its extended warranties. I asked what was going on, and was told that they had received an email from head office telling them that it was coming to an end in December, but then another saying that it was going on for now in February. He said that he wasn't sure what was happening, but the current plan is to end it at some point soon. What I was wondering is if anyone else had heard it mentioned at their dealers? I am sure I am not the only one who would consider it uneconomical to have to pay the same amount every year as I current do for 2. As such, this has me slightly worried since having a warranty on mine has proved good value for money, and it gives me peace of mind.
