  1. OK not posted on this thread yet as nothing useful to contribute till this morning, bear in mind this a Tezza not an IS but similar symptoms. The car also has has an after market TOAD alarm/immobiliser. List of things U/S Fuel Gauge (Flashing Light) Temp Gauge Rear Defogger Outside air temp indicator Air Con on Automatic (Worked on manual) Tiptronic Gear indication Snow button ECT Power button Charging indicator light on dash Door Open Indication on dash (Added) + more I did not even notice probably Cutting a long story short I started the car and hit the horn by accident putting my seat belt on this morning and the effin horn stayed on, popped the bonnet and pulled the horn fuse and the horn kept going. Next I took out the horn relay and finally the horn stopped Thank FFT I thought. Then what now, FFS the engine had stopped so put the fuse back in, lid back on the fuse box and shut the bonnet. Went to open the drivers door and it's locked, keys in the ignition and turned on, with the demister fan running (as it was on manual to defog the screen)! The car had locked all the doors! Got the spare key after a while (another long story) and got the car unlocked, fired it up and well B***ER me all the stuff on the list above was working as normal. The only difference is that the horn relay is still out. Ploughed through a the wiring diagrams and find that the horn fuse also provides a feed to the "theft deterrent ECU", the horn wiring is a simple ground through a switch. Tested the relay and it's OK so the only way to ground is through the "theft deterrent ECU"! As pointed out above the "theft deterrent ECU" also controls the headlights, it's also connected to the "body ECU" (2 of) that control the rear demister plus other stuff. That's far as i've got so far but will post back when I have any more.
  2. Would disagree with valve guide seals being the most likely cause, there would be smoke on start up. The oil weeps past the seals when the engine is stopped and collects on the seats or passes into the cylinder. No mention of that in the following. With worn bores/rings, as I said before, the oil gets sucked up the bores by the vacuum on overrun and then burns off giving smoke when you accelerate again. The above is a classic symptom of this. For a "big clouds" worth of oil to get past the seals and then through the valve guides going down a hill they would have to be seriously knackered. The oil is indeed specified to take into account clearances when the engine is new, as engines get older the bearing clearances increase and the oil will pass through bearings faster than it would in a new engine. Using a slightly thicker oil won't do any harm, in fact it will actually help keep the oil pressure up and improve the pressure in the plain bearings helping reduce wear.
  3. Gunsons do a compression tester that is relatively cheap, don't know if you can get them down under. What oil are you using at the moment?
  4. First move is to do a compression test. If compression is low squirt a bit of oil though the spark plug hole, should be possible with an oil can with a long spout and a torch. Test again, if compression gets higher you have a problem with bore/rings. IIRC compression ratio is 11.5:1 so you should get at least 10.5 bar on the compression tester. As for recon or new, if you can get a new engine go for it. Personally I would go for rebuild of my own engine ahead of buying any second hand lump. At least you know what you've got to start with. Apart from the smoke on the over run is the car running OK, if so I would say "don't worry be happy" and see how it develops. ps. As rig-pig said - what oil are you using, as an engine gets older bits wear and oil will get through the bigger spaces so you could try a thicker oil.
  5. Quite agree but then when did Clarkson ever say anything constructive or intelligent?
  6. Thanks for the reply mate, though as much by looking at it
  7. OK I have finally got round to have a go at checking the relay for the rear heated screen. It would appear to be on the rear of the drivers side footwell fuse box. Question is how to you get access to them, do you have to take out the bolts securing the fuse box or is there an easier way? TIA Neil
  8. Found it Please wait a few seconds for Video to Load!
  9. Thought you may include Apples there mate
  10. And the bags on the front are charcoal and some bits and bobs for the BBQ And we are still on amber for heavy snow Sunday night.
  11. If you can't get the car to the shops do it this way like we did. p.s Aido more on Sunday they say
  12. Vote for me, when I get in I will spend £1m on proper snow ploughs, another £500K on snow blowers just in case the ploughs are not able to cope. Add that on your council tax bill and wait another 18 years till I need them, go to the garage an F Me they are all rusted up! And you will rightly scream WHY DID YOU WASTE MY MONEY BUYING THAT LOT.
  13. If you blocked the radiator hose maybe about 3 litres to top up. If the coolant was clear then not really a problem, the idea of flushing is to clear any residue out of the system.
  14. Need to get right into the fuse box behind the panel, not just the fuse box cover. Anyone got any advice on how to get the whole lot off, and no quips from Aido on that one please TIA Neil
  15. Coolant capacity is 7.1 litres see Here so that would be give or take how much should have gone in. Is there any coolant in the reservoir? It is possible to do a water pump without draining all the coolant off, though I would take the opportunity to flush the system and change it anyway.
  16. It sure is MH434. Video was shot at Duxford on the 60th anniversary of the first Spitfire flight, Alain de Cadenet says it at the start of the clip it was 1936. So that would make it 1996. I am sure it was Ray flying, can't remember where I got that bit of info though. Another good one is the flight under the bridge from, I think, Foyles war? Google either MH434 or Ray Hannah and that one will come up.
  17. The pilot was a guy called Ray Hannah, now sadly passed away. Was probably the best Spitfire display pilot in the world.
  18. Seen it before. It's a clip from a vid that I downloaded from LiveLeak but I can't find it again so uploaded to HERE you will need a program to play FLV files that you can get from FLV PLAYER if you need it. These guys are totally nuts, good sound track too :D
  19. All my own words actually. I would not draw the line a speed cameras, facts are that speeding is an offence, you get caught tough. As I said before the holes will get plugged and and the law will stand. And yes the law can be made by a minister or the govt but it is not actually law until it comes before court and a Judge convicts someone under the new law. So in short the govt cannot cannot just pass any law they feel like at the time.
  20. And likewise you erudite spotting of sarcasm. Of course we should just don't winge if you get caught. It's all been tried and no doubt Mr Brotherson was speeding, the gun was calibrated and he tried the "well you can clock a block of flats at 100 with one of them" and is now trying the "well it's not legal anyway" defence. The avalanche of overturned convictions will be no more than the drip of melting snow off my roof.
