Since Mat C has a 2JZ in the Monster (IS), and this engine is theorically capable of about 1000bhp, I was curious what people thought the maximum BHP you could have in an IS before it became un-usable on an everyday basis?

Me neither Matt.

But based on the IS200 having 150-ish as standard, would twice the power be drivable? what about 3 times??

It's based more on your opinion, what do you think is too much, how much do you think you could handle etc...

300bhp would be the maximum for any IS200. :winky:

Especially for everyday use.

I just sold my Subaru P1 which had 300bhp, and believe me it's enough to use in a car everyday.

However, building a track day Lex is a different story! Around 450bhp would be good! Dunno how you'd get 450bhp from a Lex though... Unless you stick in a V8 and turbo the thing! OUCH! EXPENSIVE!

OK - went for 500 then.

200 is deffo not too much.

As I have an eye to my new car, and current plans are GS 430 or TVR Tamora - it would be hypocritical to say 350 - so voted 500

*cough* Tuscan *cough*

But thanks Matt, I also voted 500, mainly because I think you could just about handle 350 in an IS on a day-to-day basis, although, i wouldnt like to try it on an icy day!

Driven a 400BHP Jag S-Type R and that felt perfectly usable for normal driving, also been in a new Brabus tuned Mercedes E55 (530bhp) which also drove perfectly around town (and was amazing when floored) I guess its down to how well the car handles the power, how sensitive the throttle is etc.

i think about 300bhp N/A would be great. as this would mean that you would never realy stress the cars engine as you wouldnt use all the power all of the time. where as i find that to get the best out of the is200 you have to drive it hard. it would be more enjoyable to have at least 250bhp - 300bhp. that way it would seem effortless.

i agree with the fact that any power a car can produce can be too much for some people! mainly nova drivers and women/men who cant see over the steering wheel!

Recently sold my near standard Evo 6 which had around 280 bhp. I reckon it could have handled up to 350 bhp without any major mods but it was 4 wheel drive, very stiffly sprung, and fitted with AYC.

I think 200-250 bhp would be fine on an (unmodified) Lexus.

Slightly different way to look at all this......it's not the BHP per se.

It's the BHP/tonne, and also it's the nature of the engine.

I'll give you an example......I've driven a 550bhp/tonne Caterham 7 around the town, with an engine that only really works above 5000rpm, and revs to about 10000rpm. It was horrible to drive round town, but simply sublime everywhere else.

I owned a 360bhp Escort Cosworth, piece of cake to drive round town.

I drove a 420bhp Cerbera 4.5, it was a pig and awkward to drive.

I drove a 450bhp XKR round town and it was a piece of cake

I've driven a 600nm/500bhp Bentley Arnage T...possibly the easiest car in the world to drive.

So alot to be considered is the nature of the engine. A mate of mine (who works for Minsiter Power who build the R500 engine) has.....you guessed it....an R500based engine in his car. It's horrible to drive round town ......i mean really horrific.....and as an everyday car is really impractical....and that only has 200(ish)bhp. Though it does sound great :)

So, where I'm going with this is, that it's not really the bhp which is impractical.....it is the nature of the engine, the type of engine, and the weight of the car!!!

I voted for 800hp because at 650hp the car will be scary and in Supercar territory but you will get used to it. 800hp is far too much for street use.

For a normal person ( ;) ) 300hp makes a nice all rounder.

ooooooooooooo, now you tell me it will be scarey
