Yamaha hydrogen engine based on 2UR-FSE

Sounds like an interesting engineering project for internal use at Yamaha. For the short and medium term ( 5 - 10 yrs) this will be dead in the water for the reasons Kreifels mentioned.

Anyone else notice the heads have been flipped ? Exhaust ports and manifold are inside the V, not on the outside on the blue cam cover engine. Dead interesting.

The chap in this video on YouTube looks at the engine at an event. It has English subtitles. Currently for midship position 👀

I think that is because most hydrogen engines benefits from forced induction and "hot-V" makes it easier to fit turbo, like in F1.

I note as well that in the video the torque curve for hydrogen engine looks all over the place, but overall seems to be making very similar power to 2UR-FSE, maybe just slight dip at very very the top end, which would not be noticeable in practice. Another argument can be made that hydrogen addresses low end torque issue for petrol version, because it has heaps of it starting low down - I guess that is because the curves are for FI engine.

Imagine that as a crate motor 😄 (I know it would not be that easy).

I guess with a lot of manufacturers opting for the hot V design nowadays any issues that may have arisen have been sorted. At first I was a bit sceptical about the design but it looks like any ideas I had of heat gain problems I may have had have now disappeared and I guess with such a close design turbo lag has more or less been eliminated.

How about a ****el rotary hydrogen powered engine?

****el engines are extremely reliable; if treated the way they should be treated. They would not be used in military drones if that was not so. Heat problem is a thing of the past with the new air cooling Sparcs. UAV engine.

****lel engines have few moving parts, are more powerful than piston engine same size. The fuel consumption problem in ****el engines is due to the ignition time of gasoline, but hydrogen does not have that problem.

I have had the powerful engine cars I need and now I only care about being transported from where I am to where I want to go. Speed is less important than comfort. Also, not polluting more than absolutely necessary is something that I did not think about before, like I suppose most of us here. For those of you that do not yet feel that way about speed, ****el with hydrogen could be a way to get a small in size and big in power engine in your cars.

 

What is wrong with the name of the rotary engine made in Germany since it is replaced with ****el?

It is used in Mazda RX8 and now in new RX9.

Hmmmmm, Rotary engines  engineered by Felix ****el ( Dr. F ****el) were interesting but did not find their way to mass production due to reliability issues.

NSU RO 80. A Brilliant car way ahead of its time. Just look at it. The brandnew Mercedes EQS seems to be the child but with a different drivetrain as the rotary engine in the RO80 was a ****ing desaster. So much the overwhelming majority of cars had to be bought back as the engines suffered catastrophic ****ing failures. Mazda took it up in the RX7 and in Japan in a salooncar the name i forgot but also here reliability was dreadful with engines not lasting over 150k km.

I am not saying Dr ****el was a ****er but his brainchild is not really working on petrol. Brave hero that tries to convert it Hydro!

Some are very sensitive.

As you say, they have been used in drones for ages as they only have a few moving parts. I loved my RX7 it was turbine like in its power delivery and easy to tune but they did have a reputation for eating seals. When I was running my track prepped RX7 engine rebuilds were almost considered a normal part of ownership.

Smart Roadster has a little MB turbo engine that last close to forever if treated correct.

Run warm before using the turbo power.

In cold weather it takes a bit of patience.

The RX7 engine has same problem if oil is not hot before demanding full power from it and oil takes longer time to get hot than water in the Smart.

Some of the rotary engines (no longer using the name of the inventor billede.png.75f7693c27f09395cbf4c8cfed280529.png) did last long time, but many of the owners of them did not wait pressuring them till oil was warm enough and able to lubricate the seals well.

I believe those handling the drones know how to treat the engine so it does not get problems. If the rotary engine was not reliable, I am sure it would not still be used in drones.

dont know anything about drones , how many flying hours do they make and how does this relate to running hours of a car engine, per month/year?

also cars go up and down the gears with revs matching drones are ralatively flat? Does a drone engine have a much easier life?

Did you have problems with the engine?

I didn't have a great deal of bother with mine. The first owner was a fanatic it was his baby and cared for it a lot. The second owner the guy I bought it off was a *nob who messed around with it in a bad way which was very common, I was on my way to get some Tein coil-overs fitted and get it corner weighted etc when I had an Audi right up my backside on the motorway. As the car had warmed up properly I decided to put my foot down, the Audi disappeared from my rear view mirror but I managed to blow the engine up. According to the rotary specialist in Portsmouth someone had turned up the boost pressure to max (it was programmable which was not a good idea for anyone who didn't know what they were doing) I hasten to add I did not adjust it but the previous owner obviously did. I kept with upgraded twin turbo's rather than a big single and enjoyed every track day I had with it.
