Dashcam Suggestions - NX 300h 2015

Hi All, 

I was looking to install dashcam for Lexus NX 300h 2015.

Could you please share some thoughts about the Dashcams you use, please? I think I saw a dashcam offer on the Lexus dealership but failed to ask for details at the time and the centre is now closed (Maidstone).

I have a Viofo A129 Pro. 4K recording. Looks great day and night and is discrete enough to fit behind the rear view mirror. Something like this will be much better than the Nextbase cameras Lexus install and will be markedly cheaper too.

I’ve always had BlackVue cameras.  in fact it was the evidence collected by my last cameras of an HGV swapping lanes to write off my last car, that convinced his Insurers to pay up in full without further quibble, that paid for my Lexus.  

BlackVues are noted for superb technology and outstanding reproduction - especially useful if you want to catch readable number plates.  Neat and unobtrusive, they also offer a great deal of interconnectability with cell phones, for example, although it’s not something I use.

They do lack a built-in screen by which to view video files immediately, but pairing with cellphones gives you better viewing anyway.  They are among the more expensive dashcams, so perhaps the first thing to do is determine how much you want to spend - and if you’re going to install it yourself.

You don’t mention if you’ve had them before, so in case not, here are some more general thoughts.

1.  Always go for a two camera setup.  You’re just as likely to be hit from behind as hit something in front.

2.  Install the cameras so that they can operate in Parking Mode ie with the ignition off.  Again the car is just as likely to be hit - and more likely to be vandalised - when stationary.

3.  Buy and fit the biggest SD Card the system will take and keep the smaller card that comes with the camera as a backup.  If involved in a serious incident- and able to do so - swap the cards round so that you preserve the evidence.

4.  Depending on usage, reformat the SD Card on a regular basis.  Say, every 4 to 6 weeks.  It’s what the manufacturers recommend to prevent rewriting errors corrupting the video files.

+1 for the Viofo A129 Pro, great little cameras.

Nextbase have a current offer on both their 622 elite two camera setup and installation. So around £460 all in, done at your home. Anti shake seems good.

Garmin 55 in the Subaru and Garmin 56 in the Lexus, I like them because they're small, very good quality video, the cable is thin and easily tucks away behind the windscreen seals etc. I'm sure there's newer better ones but I can't fault my old Garmins.

Check Thinkware, some of them will send you notifications on your phone (if you add a sim with internet) everytime someone gets close to your car or drives it away. Take the normal dash cam to the next level with a bit of security judging how many of these cars get stolen. I would advise a Ghost II or Pandorma imobiliser for maximum security.

On amazon the GKU is on discount and has a lot of positive reviews. Also, you can download on your movil the videos, doesnt has a display (i like this option)

It also has  the option to connect it dirrectly to the fusible box and has detects the voltage, if it gets lower then 11.6V it shuts off:

@Kaizen Did you purchase a dashcam in the end?

I am also considering one (preferably that links to the existing reversing camera) and wondered how you got on.

Also, If you haven't had it installed yet, I know that the Toyota dealership in Maidstone installs dashcams too.

I haven't studied the tech specs but we are on our third nextbase. Not because the old ones failed but because they were left in the cars when sold due to being hardwired in. They have proved to be reliable..

SD cards - get the right one - fast video reading, known quality manufacturer, higher capacity etc. Can't remember the exact model number but it is out there on t'internet.

They (SD cards ) occasionally ask to be re-formatted if they encounter an error. Simple in situ task.

Have a look at the Thinkware U3000 - second Thinkware camera I have had. Includes speed camera warnings. Saved me points on many occasions
