I'm messing around with different seating positions to try find the perfect one!

In regards to the hybrid health check, there won't be any warranty if it passes due to age but still gives me reassurance on it's condition.

Unfortunately the hybrid health check failed and came back with DTC Code P3000 Battery Control System

I was advised both by the seller and Lexus Bolton to drive 500 miles and then go for another hybrid check.

It was shocking and disappointing just 1 week after buying this car that it failed.

John From cars by web said it's because 12v battery was recently changed/jump started.

He is 100% convinced and said it will be fine.

Indeed this has come up many times, even when the dealer puts the 12v on charge it will fail the health check unless driven 500 miles before the test.

I really do hope that's all it is but Jonathen is convinced.

It hasn't actually failed, it's just that there's no data to work with.

Charging or changing the 12V battery (and maybe some other things too) will cause any stored DTCs to be lost (IIRC). Driving 500 miles before doing the HHC will cause the DTCs to show again and give a stable 'base' to work from. I think.

Very interesting how it works, I'm definitely learning new things everyday.

I'm often getting static shocks when exiting my car and was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? What do you recommend for it? Spray or...... ?

It's when touching the outside but it's bothering me and annoying.

Any advice please 🙏

Me too.

As I get out of the car I make sure to be touching the outside of it. The most convenient (for me) is to just open the door and put my hand over the top of it before I start moving or wriggling my bum to the seat edge. Keep contact with it until you're fully out of the car and Robert is your mother's brother.

Do sprays or anything else work 🤔 ?

I remember that years ago it was not unusual to see vehicles with an earthing strap fixed to the rear of the cars and that made contact with the ground.  I don't know how successful this was but you don't see it now.  You can get anti static sprays that can help.  We did this in our offices where people were experiencing shocks due to the carpeting  - probably a high content of man made fibre in it..

@Barry14UK

Which anti static spray do you recommend?

I think it was organised by the Cleaning  company that had the office cleaning contract but don't know who it was as outside the scope of my work and it was a long time ago.  You could make contact with a cleaning company and see what/who they recommend.

I called up Lex-Tek Autos in Sheffield for a quote on a service and was shocked at the prices they came back with.

Full service including vat is £515 and medium service including vat is £275

Almost as expensive as going straight to a main dealer

Main dealer is  RX   £400/£760

My car is 17.5 years old and to me it doesn't make sense to pay such expensive costs just for a service.

On the flip side/other hand this car has been serviced yearly up until now by Lexus Guildford with a full stamped book so i would love to keep that service history up but can't afford it......

I'm really not sure what to do but service is due NOW

If you had a full service last year then the likelihood is that you only need an intermediate this year.

My full service last June (carried out by a reputable Toyota Indy) was £330 and that included an MoT so I'm expecting a slight reduction next month when I go again.

Your comment about not being able to afford it is worrying, especially given the age of your RX (same as mine), because they increasingly demand regular quality maintenance so you should really avoid short cuts just to save a few bob as such a decision is sure to come back & bite you.

My advice is STAY AWAY FROM MAIN DEALERS, their prices are a complete rip-off. Do your research into local Indies, essentially Toyota specialists, and investigate the Forum regarding local recommendations but whatever you do don't penny pinch.

Always remember if you look after your car then it will look after you. Good Luck.

Who cares. You'll probably be the last owner, otherwise the car is at a value where keeping the FDSH is at cost negative return value when selling. You've got the piece of mind of the history, now just enjoy the car.

For the sake of an oil and some filters being changed, do it yourself. Any official service includes inspections which will bound to throw up suggested repairs given the age

On the other hand, why should servicing costs become cheaper as the car gets older?  After all, the renewable components and fluids cost the same irrespective of the age of the car.  The service times and hourly rates remain the same.

If anything, there may well be additional work required as a car gets older, over and above the regular schedule.  In reality, reductions in servicing costs are usually only obtained by using small, independent garages and non-OEM components.

Further compromises could prove more dangerous than no service at all!

With respect Phil that's the flip side of the coin. Yes it's an old car and yes its residual value is on serious decline but if it's a 'keeper' and you rely upon it (ie. not wanting to replace it as it's the devil you know) then it still needs looking after ... and if you're not the DIY kinda guy (which I suspect is the category that 'b4u2' falls into) it still needs servicing!

Precisely so!  👍

I think the majority of car owners do not keep a particular \lexus until they or are car's life is over.  Tt might be kept if used occasionally and the driver has the use of another car

Apart from other considerations , most Insurers disproportionately increase the cost of cover for elderly drivers and some will no longer offer cover, particularly on high group cars.  So there comes a time that even running as an occasional car does not make sense, unless you have very deep pockets or maybe have a car that is becoming so high in value that you are keeping it as an appreciating asset, like say an E Type Jag for example. rather than a mass produced Lexus model.

I take your point, but I still feel it's not a good idea to go chasing work. At a car of this age, one failure of a key competent could make the car a write off, so spending £2-3k on cambelts, pumps, services, control arms etc now, on top of the £3k paid for the car could easily be undone by discovered rust under the sills, abs module failure etc.

I'm not advocating no services, just moderation and getting to know the car a bit and discovering priority items based on how the car is driving

As you no longer get the Relax warranty or Hybrid Health Check it makes sense to go with a good independent rather than a Lexus dealer.

Also if there is a fault Lexus will only fit brand new Lexus parts with prices and labour charges to match, an independent should be able to offer different options such as after market parts or even used parts in some circumstances.
