Just Bought An Ls430 ... With A Couple Of Warning Lights On

Recommended Posts

Well we just bought a Lexus LS430 (with the premium pack I think it is called)

did not go intenting to buy it, but once we have seen it ... well I secretly wanted it! lol

177.000 miles on the clock and 1 private owner from new, it is a 2001 model.

It is loaded with everything under the sun, soft close doors, heated-coole front seats, rear massage seats and heated too, side and rear blinds, electric rear seats, something that is air-purifier need to find more details about it, cool box between the rear seats, air suspension etc etc.

By the way it is not black. but it is some sort of very dark green with cream leather interior.

The 18" alloy wheels it has seem to be an extra option I guess.

I think the only problem that needs to be sorted out it that the EML light and the TCS is on. I would not think it has to do with the ABS as no other lights are coming up. So I will start investigating MAF sensor and Throttle body? Any other ideas are welcome :)

Cheers

Vasilis.

Cheers messi ... labour I would fit the part my self or will have a go with a mechanic friend of mine.

Certainly I would not dish out £600! lol especially Lexus dealers are not in my good books lately :(

While I was going through the paperwork of the car (the joy of the auctions lol... getting a car and you have no idea you will find inside!)

I have all the books etc, servicebook stamped until 2007 however I do have some Lexus dealer invoices since then to date so I will call them tomorrow and see what they have to say about their records, would be nice to find when the cambelts were changed.

Anyhow I also found a call out for AA last year (due to flat Battery car was not moved for 3 weeks it said) and also mentioned for a code P1651

So I could not wait got my code reader and went outside to the car, plugged it in and got a plethora of codes lol

P0135

P0155

P1351

P1354

P1651

P1663

I cleared them all and restarted the car, but since then no code has come back.

So I assume they might start coming up as I drive it ...

MOT expires on the 18th of November so if they stay off until I manage to pass it and then I can crack on to repair them.

On a side note I just received my rear Sport spoiler for the GS300 !! cannot wait to paint it and install it, the LED built in brake light will look nice :)

Also got a drive shaft with the ABS ring that would solve my ABS problem on the rear corner I am getting. Fingers crossed for the GS as I really do like the car.

I got mine from an eBay seller in Ireland, I am amazed with the packaging and he even sent me the brackets enclosed nicely in a different bag.

Here is the link incase he has something you might need.

He sent them via DPD overall a very good service.

By the way ... the car came with two smart keys

However the master key (it has 3 buttons on it) is complete and everything is working.

The second key... it has the shell and the blade, but the inards are missing! ooppss what would be my best bet on approaching to a working second key.

Thanks Steve

unfortunatelly ... the 2nd gen GS apparently the rings cannot be detached from the driveshaft and it all comes as one piece :( ...

1st gen and 3rd gen they come as a seperate part.

lol mechanically it does look clean!

But the interior!!! ouch! the owner did not know what cleaning meant :( ...

it is full of sweets all over the place, an abundance of pens and pencils, and dirt lol

Exterior will need touching up here and there and a very good detailing.

I need to sort out the electic steering adjustment too, it goes in and out ... but not up and down.

I will clean the MAF sensor with some IPA

and then see how it goes with the codes.

After I cleaned the codes, I had it idling and revved it a bit while stationary I did not move the car, I had the EML light flashing for a few seconds ,then it went away. But it did not store any codes.

with regards to the key - im my experience the only way is to goto lexus and buy a new one - they then code the key for you aswell - the smart locking programming can only be done by lexus. Im not sure what their view is if you buy a second hand key and take it to them to program (thats if you can get a UK key - USA ones are no good)

I just got a quote last week from them for my 04 plate - £180 inc programming.

Chers Mark, £180 doesnt sound that bad :) I might try to get a used one if I can find one for pennies... and take it to them complaining it is not working anymore lol.

I went out today and removed the MAF sensor , looked oily and quite dark. So a good old clean with IPA and solvent cleaner. Put it back in again and fixed it.

The idle is smooth and the car runs perfect.

Now I only have the EML light on, which relates to the code P1651 as you mentioned the VSV, so at least is nice to know I have only one thing to worry.

This will not failt the MOT at least :)

One more question, Is the airsuspension operated with an air pump on this car? or with a hydralic pump?

all i know it is referred to as a compressor and is located behind the drivers side front tyre wheel arch.

When you flick the switch to high you should hear a dull (like a motorbike far away) sound and you should see the car rise.

yeah it does that :)

I called Lexus today ... but they do not have any record of a cambelt done to the car (I assume it is done being the car has 177000miles!) however they prompty said that they can book me in for next week and they could replace the cambelt for £520 (Lexus hatfield that is)

It did sound cheap for a dealer lol

I was wondering if I could huggle on the price and get a spare key for same or very similar price to £520! lol

Blimey the price is dropped! lol When I was looking to buy a GS430 Sport (2nd Gen) a couple of years ago, I remember reading that the cambelt was about £1000 work.

But ended up buying the GS300 ... and the cambelt had already been done to it by the previous owner.

I have thought the same Malc, if I take the car for the cambelt to be replaced I would like to replace more than less for the peace of mind.

I did a bit online digging and found out the translation of the codes

P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1) /21
P0155 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1) or Oxygen Sensor Heater Current is Less than 0.25 amp, or Exceeds 2 amps or Voltage Drop for the Heater Exceeds 5 Volts (Cam.)
P1351 - VVT (Variable Valve Timing) Sensor/Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem (Bank 2)
P1354 - VVT (Variable Valve Timing) System Malfunction (Bank 2)
P1651 - VSV For ACIS Circuit Malfunction
P1663 - OCV (Oil Control Valve) Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2)

None of them refer in an obvious way to the MAF sensor I cleaned.

Since the cleaning of the MAF,I have idled the car several times and none of the codes returned (apart from P1651 - VSV For ACIS Circuit Malfunction), haven't had a chance to drive the car yet. Tomorrow I will do a long journey about 200miles return to a friend in order to have a more thorough mechanical check prior to MOT. So will see if any codes will come back.

I took the car out for a spin ... (wanted to check the tracking as I have some tramlining!, I suspect the problem will be some sort of worn bushes on the front for that.)

I had the EML light coming on and flashing some times, and then after about 5 miles Check VSC came on, the idle became unsettled and the engine not running as smooth.

So I came back home and plugged in the reader.

New codes came up;

P0300 -- Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected or Misfiring Of Multiple Cylinders During Same 200-1000 Engine Revolutions

P0302 -- Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected

P0304 -- Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

P0306 -- Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

P0308 -- Cylinder 8 Misfire Detected

P1354 -- VVT (Variable Valve Timing) System Malfunction (Bank 2)

P1651 -- VSV For ACIS Circuit Malfunction

Shall I suspect that the P1354 can cause the misfiring and the array of P03** codes?

Having read a few things might be the OCV, but which one is the Bank 2 (driver side or passenger side?)

I shall try to remove and clean... if no luck maybe change?

I have read about some people having problems just after replacing a cambelt. It is just a shame I do not have any idea when and if the cambelt was replaced on this car. It would have made things easier :(

  • 2 weeks later...

I have replaced the OCV valve on the driver side and has fixed all the misfiring.

Now I have only the VSV code and the O2 codes :)

P0135 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1) /21
P0155 - O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 1) or Oxygen Sensor Heater Current is Less than 0.25 amp, or Exceeds 2 amps or Voltage Drop for the Heater Exceeds 5 Volts (Cam.)
P1651 -- VSV For ACIS Circuit Malfunction

At least the good news are that the car has passed it's MOT today. The only advisory being the EML light.

Really pleased
