  1. I would wonder if the throttle body needs a clean as well, though never had the sulphur smell which does sound more like sensor issues, or maybe just a good burn up the motorway to clean the exhaust system through.
  2. I had this with my Mk3, and also current Mk4, it's almost as if it is saying 'Do not take anything for granted now that I am getting on a little'!!! Sometimes found opening and closing the moonroof did the trick, but maybe the LS was just tricking me?
  3. I think I might try Snow Mode, kind of makes sense, and assume it does not add to fuel consumption. Also tried Super a few times, but cannot say I noticed any difference in the way Mk4 or previous Mk3 ran. Maybe more town driving is where Super comes out better
  4. Had same issue with mine, and last service had throttle body cleared out, and hey presto no problems wierd cold starts, gear changes, near stalling. I assume additives do the same thing, just takes a bit longer.
  5. All the best things come in small packages, the LS looks small against the modern Mini!!!, and is only a little bigger than a Smart () Every now and again I let my foot take me to 190kph, just to make sure my 17 year old motor still has it in her, and on a decent road surface all you hear is the sound of my wife saying 'Slow down'.
  6. Looks like the dogs 'wobbly bits' Infotainment in a vintage LS, nice (as Louis Balfour from the Fast Show would say)
  7. "I brive petter lafter 3 bites officer", is all I said and thats when the trouble started!!!! Now I just walk to the Fleece at Rooksmoor (nice pub if your ever driving the A46 near Stroud).
  8. Agree with use of Pagid, just had them fitted to mine, and makes braking a lot more predictable than the rather naff blueprints. For price Pagid are good for most things, not so sure I would want to be using them on a track day though (if ever I coudl find the time to go on a track day - just to see what the old beast could do).
  9. Not tried the water test, but had a go at drinking beer while sat on the bonnet, but after 3 pints kept falling off, and plenty of ripples in the muddle puddle I landed in.
  10. Chris, 3090's the dream speaker when I was a youngster with no money, no girlfriend/wife, and no room big enough to fit them in. My wife tolerates my HiFi hobby but such a big beast of a speaker would be a step to far
  11. Paul, sounds like your a real gent helping out there. Roger, as the the 'what the ...' comment on the boom box, there is nothing like real bass, but I reckon the standard bass unit in any LS is pretty good, maybe not top notch, but good enough so that when I sit in the local Tesco car park waiting to pick up my son, the drum & bass coming from my car makes people turn their head to see what an old g*t like me is up to.
  12. Too right on darned speed bumps, I have negotiate some on the way to work, anything above 15mph is jarring, yet most people seem to carry on at 30mph, so I assume they have no idea of the damage being done to their shocks and running gear. I recall from my time of working in Holland that the Dutch just remove all road markings where they want drivers to slow down, as without white lines etc, then you tend to drop your speed down, or maybe the Dutch are a little more civil when it comes to respecting that it's not only cars that use the road. As a part time cyclist, i would say the majority of speed humps make matters worse, as drivers and cyclists work out the best way to avoid them. Still I once had a county highways dept as a client many years ago, and what was quite clear to me was that none of them knew what road users really needed to make sure driving was safe. The other thing about humps is that they increase pollution as you have to rev up after slowing down, so just a slower death by fumes.
  13. Not my cup of tea, that grill looks too much like a basking shark that swallowed a shopping trolley.
  14. I had this issue and turned out to be really filthy throttle body, since cleaned at last service, no stalling (or super low revs) on firing up.
  15. I know Wiltshire is a big county, but Gas & Go in Swindon are where I take mine, they are right next to Swindon railway station. Appreciate if you're down near Salisbury then Swindon a bit of a pain.
  16. Job done, started climbing at 4:30, got to top at 5:50. wind was around 40+mph a fair bit of ice and snow near summit, brilliant sunrise. Photo of my son taking photos for college project wrapped up like an Eskimo. My camera does not do the scene any justice. Bought new head torches for trip, well worth doing, and about 10 other people were up there to see it. I managed to keep up with my son on the climb up, but my knees ached all day Sunday, but determined not to let getting close to 60 get in the way of some darned fine views to be had around the UK.
  17. If my 400 gave up tonight (only 174K) I would be looking at this, seems like a bargain. Only thing I would want to know is when running gear replacements were, as from my experience this sort of mileage is when they are likely to need sorting if still on original parts. But I trust my 400 is going to be working okay for a while especially as I am due to be driving to Brecon for 4am Saturday morning to climb to the top of Pen Y Fan to see the sunrise (some college project my son is doing).
  18. From my experience of Mk3, the ECU capacitor issue meant it kept stalling at junctions after engine warmed up, but never impacted the mpg (as far as I could tell) With Mk4 I have not experienced any problems that seem ECU related and having just had throttle body cleaned it does seem make a difference to when idle, and a mild improvement in MPG, but my car has never been as bad as 1mpg, even when climbing 18% hill from a cold start (gets as bad as 6mpg when doing this).
  19. I would say that cargastruts have not faired as well as I would have liked, but being cheap as chips, I guess after 4 years that's what you get. I find in cold weather they are next to useless, so still keep the Lexus Bonnet Wood-Shaft in the boot, and will get around to forking out for better ones some time.
  20. Like the broken mountain bike my son has just presented me with after his trip to see a mate. Still too dark to have a good look and cannot be ars*d to sort out the bike shed right now, so it's off the the fridge for a beer!!
  21. I prefer blue, had silver in the past, and agree silver looks better for longer but a well waxed blue is IMHO a nicer look. Like the wheels, though would not suit the 400 as much as 430. I assume you go to Asda early in the morning as never seen a supermarket car park that quiet after 10 in the morning.
  22. Now in 5th year of ownership of the Mk4 and sailed through MOT with no advisories (thank heavens after the money spent last year with control arms). I gave her a nice 20 mile sprint down the M4 - rather than do the back roads home. Had the Blueprint pads changed for Pagid and so far the brake vibration has gone. Amazed that the Blueprints were still less than 50% worn after 40K - but they have been driving me nuts these last few months. Also had the throttle Body cleaned and now morning starts are fine - before it was firing up and then dipping down to 100rpm (or less), and even stalled a few weeks back. This makes me wonder if last years twice flooding the engine was not me (with heavy foot) but the throttle sticking. One other comment, with the brakes sorted I have noticed the NEXEN N Blues do produce their own distinctive rumble, mind you after 10K miles they seem like less than a 3rd worn, which seems a little crazy given the rough surfaces I drive on every day on what the local authority calls a highway. Now need to find some cash to repair the keyed paint work, and the rear pillar dent (falling branch strike) and some time to spruce the leather work up.
  23. Never had a problem with the scissor jacks on Mk3 or current, and always felt safe when using it to change tyre or fiddling with windscreen wash sensor Wonder if Mk1 had a different make of jack
  24. Had two LS with leaky boot. I just got the old seal off, cleaned up the metal edge, (used rust stop on one where corrosion was starting so set in). I then clean out the seal (using a blunted screwdriver) and then used bog-standard silicon seal (B*Q stylee) and re-seated the original seal. Took about an hour(ish) and saved a few bob. Never had any leaky boot syndrome since. Maybe in 10 or so years time I will regret doing this if the silicon fails and is a real monkey to clean up the seal, but modern sealants are better than what would have been used originally so should last fair bit longer.
  25. Great looking car, I love that colour more than my blue, but when I was looking no tidy ones were around. Enjoy the wafting times ahead
