Depreciation

Recommended Posts

I've been monitoring the Parkers website for some time just keeping tabs on what my motor is worth part exchange. Not intending any change till 2007 but just checking.

For the last 4 months it has been frozen at £15,300. I assumed that they had forgotten to update it or they only do it occasionally on this free service.

I looked yesterday and the latest figure is £15,000.

So according to them the IS didn't depreciate at all in 4 months and has only depreciated £300 in 5 months :)

However, According to the latest Which? magazine the IS is going to lose £11,470 in 3 years !!!! Could they be taking a model change into account ?

Your better of gauging you vehicle price working from Parkers and What Cars site, i've been keeping an eye on my IS200 SE price for the last year, and its seems to drop about £100-200 a month.

Sometimes the site drops the price at the start of the month, other time towards the end, take a look at http://www.whatcar.co.uk/ :)

You may find the what car site a little more true to life :o .

Just to give an idea of deprecation on the IS200 SE over a 13 month period, i kept an eye on both Parkers and What Car guides and the What Car guide is much more consistent.....

My car IS200 SE Auto, 2000 X reg, mileage then 22K....price is for Private sale values..

Dec..03.....£13500

Jan..04......£13500

Feb..04......£13500

Mar...04...------

Apr...04.....£12622

Jun..04......£12737

Jul..04.......£12672

Aug..04...------

Sept..04....£11783

Oct..04......£11194

Nov..04.....£11093

Dec..04.....£10665

Jan..05.....£10665

Seems the only time the prices stand still is Christmas and new year.

So it seems my motor has lost £2835.00 in a year ;) .

Is the Which? figure based on retail to trade-in price or retail to retail?

The Which? report was flawed as it had quite a few BMW and MB at the top but failed to take into account the extra money people send on options which you get hardly anything for at trade-in.

The figures were based on buying new and selling (trade-in I assume) after 3 years.

Mind you, they listed it as a Lexus IS200 V6 !!!!!!

Just looked at Parkers and a 3 year old (2002 on a 51 plate) is listed at £21,435 new with a trade in of £11,730 = £9705 loss.

Used my SE Auto as a base

I lost a :tsktsk: load of money on mine - bought it from Lexus back in March for about £15k (but I did get a really good part-ex deal on my previous car - got 1k more than I paid for it). I just sold it to a dealer for £11k - that's £4k in less than a year :crybaby: ... and that's after quite a lot of shopping round. Maybe I would have got a lot more if I'd tried selling it privately.

Seems like once the IS200 is over 3 years old then they're not quite so desirable.

I think that I'm deffo going to be up for one of the new IS200's when they come out.

Does anyone have any opinions on the best time to sell an existing car before the new one comes out? When does the 'big hit' with depreciation set in?

My IS200 SE Auto will be 3 years old in March '06 with about 15k miles on the clock by then. Should I just trade her in at the dealer if the new IS comes out around that time? Or perhaps sell my car privately 6 months before and drive the wife's car!

Advice welcomed!

That is just the hit you take buying and trading in at a Lexus dealer. I bet you would have lost £3.5k if you traded in the next day.

I have to intervene here guys. I bought a brand new Vauxhall Corsa for the missus a while back. It's an X-reg, (2000) NEW shape Sxi and cost nearly 9 grand at the time. Now, it's worth around 2,500-3,000 if we're lucky.

Aye, I'm getting a little concerned that my 02 plate IS 200 Sport+Styling will be worth a lot less than I had hoped for when the new IS comes out. The dealer has offered me 12K part chop now at 50Kmiles :crybaby:

  • 5 weeks later...

the thing is you try going into your lexus dealer and quoting the parkers trade price to them, they dont give a toss.

they offered me 2 grand under the trade in price for my wifes 4x4 the other day and only budged another 500 quid when pushed.

Land Rover offered 500 above the trade in price so i was well pleased.

i think we are in for a big shock when the new model comes out and loads of 2-5 yr old is200 `s suddenly hit the market.
